A sort of addition to the world of Walt Kelly -- think of Isobel as a Big City cousin to Mlle. Hepzibah.

Didn't mean to start a new subject... but it's been a loooong time since I posted anything on Fchan and I've lost the hang of it. What's done is done, though, so I proceed.

This piece was used for the cover of this year's Worldcon in Montreal. In case you don't keep up with events in SF fandom, I was the Fan Guest of Honour, which is a pretty big deal in Sf fandom. Free trip, free room, a per diem to spend as I liked, and lots of publicity. I got to hand somebody a Hugo award. I met Neil Gaimon. It was the pinacle of my career, you might say. Unfortunately, its something that only happens once.

In any event, the art shows my signature character Saara Mar, on Mars. Sure, it's a bit chilly and there's about as much air there as in an incandescent light bulb, but that's no problem for Saara.

Fleur is a semi-regular guest on the Muppet Show.

Or would you believe --

Another skunk-girl, but another treatment as well. They do tend to look fundamentally the same, but aren't necessarily the same character. Or any character.

I didn't intend for Sis to become a character, but one of my regular customers likes her enough that he's commissioned her several times. That makes her "offiically" a character, I guess. She's sort of B'rer Rabbit's younger sister.

I did this for a fanzine, on request. I don't like doing requests much, and this was no exception. It was amusing enough to rough out the cartoony figures, but finishing the detail work was a pain.... and the article it illustrated wasn't any good. Oh well. If I didn't keep in my hand with SF zines, I'd be soon forgotten.

Hockey Night in Montreal. This was another piece I did for the Montreal Worldcon. It was one of their official T-shirts, in three colours. I rather like the b/w version better.

Just a pencil sketch. It came to mind while not thinking about art, particularly. That's often the best way to come up with a good idea -- don't think about it.

A commission by someone who owned a Nissan 300 ZX "Fairlady" and wanted an attractive hood ornament.

While I'm posting skunks, it would be a pity if I didn't post a drawing of the one who started it all -- Walt Kelly's Ma'm'zelle Hepsibah. He never drew her like this though...

Something for those "gay at heart" I guess. I just thought it was cute, myself.

Sho 'nuff, ah is come frum Dogpatch! Or maybe Bunnypatch... Hillbillies were never anything like Al Capp depicted them, but one can have fun with the idea anyway.

Another piece for the Montreal Worldcon. Not for one of the con's publications, but for a student newspaper (called The Link) covering the Worldcon. This is the same art, but the graphics at top and bottom of the paper have been removed.

I should have mentioned that this is Saara Mar again. In fact, she hasn't gone far from where she stood in the previous picture she's in. It's part of the same background! I had very little time to do the new piece, and chose to use part of the previous work and just add a new foreground figure.

One last post. Saara Mar once again. This time trying to find a little peace and quiet on the Moon. She isn't gettingit. Note the small rip in her beach umbrella. Follow a line from that to her spilled drink. (Actually, it's only been knocked over. Since it's frozen, it hasn't really spilled.) The new craterlet next to the glass is the clue to the unexpected disturbance.

Sometimes it seems that nobody ever posts here until I do. Then they post just to push me down the page, so something else is at top. Or is that must my Paranoia speaking? What do you think, Paranoia?

it means there's life in this board!

the background scenery remains amazingly detailed, giving it some "heavy metal-ish" comics style, that's something rare to see merged with anthros chars, and quite pleasant visually :3

No.1168 - Link Reply Report 1168 2

I dunno about the rest, but I, for one, really love it when you post here... your work was largely responsible for my discovering the fandom - There'll always be a soft spot in my heart for Saara.

And the Hugo should totally have been yours!

No.1169 - Link Reply Report 1169 2

Well, Hugo-wise there's always next year. But it would take about 50 or 75 people willing to buy supporting memberships in the Worldcon, and that's a minimum of $50 each. People don't buy Worldcon memberships just to vote, for obvious reasons.

Also, next year in another Aussiecon. (4th. or 5th. -- I forget.) There's an Australian favourite named "Ditmar," a fellow Aussie. The guy isn't bad at all. He's a computer compostie artist -- he takes pictures of things and modifies them and layers them into something that looks like a gaudy SF magazine cover. This goes over really well with SF fans, though its not my cup of tea. I prefer art that shows a more hands-on approach. Even if its digitally coloured and tweaked, at some point somebody drew it, and that's the way I like it.

Anyway, I'd give pretty good money that Ditmar will be next year's winner.

No.1183 - Link Reply Report 1183 2

There's another process where one takes a rough sketch and works it into a piece of digital art - Antarctic Press had a SIG at SDCC back around '97 or so that I attended; supposedly this was a regular method among AP's comic artists at the time, and may still be today.

No.1185 - Link Reply Report 1185 2

>>1169

Actually, the ONLY reason I buy a worldcon membership anymore is to vote... I don't do well with large crowds, so my convention days are largely behind me. I only attend smaller, more intimate special interest cons these days. Still, I suspect that you're right - the fix is in for this Ditmar bloke.

I tend to agree with you about artwork, though... I guess I'm just old school - I love what computers can do, and I've seen some great stuff done in post processing of a scanned image - but I just prefer something that someone actually /drew/. It's only within the past few years that digital tools have really been able to emulate their real world counterparts properly... so I hope things will swing back to some more traditional styles.

That was one of the things that really attracted me to your work - I'm a designer by training, and I'm afraid that I tend toward minimalist influences... danish modern, bauhaus, some japanese - and it influences my preferences in traditional art as well. I like a clean style - a sureness of contour, and an economy of line. You always managed to get so much into such a deceptively simple package. There's a lot to be said for elegance.

There are, of course, dozens of artists in the genre who's work I enjoy and admire - but I probably wouldn't have found them if I hadn't found yours first.

So thanks. ^_^ Sorry if I'm gushing too much, but it's nice to be able to share that.

It warms the cockles of my heart it does.

Ditmar is Dick Jansen, if I have that right. He's an old time Austrailian fan artist who went totally overboard for computer generated art. The new stuff really impresses the average SF fan who just sees a lot of busy-ness and colour and cool stuff like dinosaurs and fallen ruins and Jules Verne submarines all stuck in the same picture. I'm not sure that they graps that its just fancy clip art that has been stretched and textured and re-coloured. In any case, I expect the Aussies to stick together at the Worldcon this year, so Ditmar is probably a shoe-in. If not, there's Sue Mason. All the Brits vote for Sue, so she has either won or come in second over the last few years.

As for the Canadian fans, who I might otherwise count on, they don't seem to have a clue about the mainstream of fandom. Last year's winner of the Canadian award for fan activity was a fanzine dedicated to listing comic book superheroes. Canadian fandom is a world of its own, and I don't figure myself as part of it.
