Renamon Vs. Zorori probably would be out now if I hadn't taken a comission. When I do comission work, I stop everything else because I'm being payed. I have some scenes finished, but I'd rather do the whole thing and just release that in one go.

As for the big animation project, that's a long way away. Months away. It's going to have a lot of work put into it, using 3D technologies I currently know nothing about. It will be a series. I'm hoping I'll be able to keep up with the work, so that new episodes can come out regularly.

You see, there's a large amount of time that is capitally invested in 3D. So I'm hoping that once everything's set up, I'll just make periodical new models and such, and that will leave me open for animating each episode.

Before the boards were wiped, I had stated my intentions for the big animation project. I'm just going to repost the copypasta from my FA journal just in case anyone missed it.

Back in November last year, I mentioned that I wanted to do something a little more than just random, contextless porn. My research was far from demographic, but I at least arrived at the general agreement that accompanying story is desirable. My desire to add story and interactivity to my flash work has led me to start quite a hefty project.

I also want to try my hand at designing some original characters. I've still got my other animations I've been mentioning on the go though.

Details will slowly be disseminated as I come up with them, but I can dish out a few facts just now...

The theme will be science fiction, just for a change from The Tail Underground and High Tail Hall (both of which I cite as inspiring me to do this project). The setting is aboard a starship.

I've decided so far to have six characters, and I'll probably introduce more as time goes on. No other characters will be designed until I get myself established though.

I don't want to give away everything at once, but most of the characters will have their own work aboard the ship. These will be a commander (head honcho, of course), a programmer (for keeping the ships operating system intact), a doctor (for obvious reasons), an engineer (for running the hardware), a cook (not a large crew, but for nostalgia) and finally, a guest.

I think the game will be episodic, so there are a number of different stories and each of these can be accessed by players whenever they desire. I'll just use the ship at first, but there's plenty of expansion available (space stations, other ships, planets and so on).

The player will be mildly customisable. It will always be first-person-perspective, but parts of the player will show at times, and I'm going to allow them to choose their skin type (furry, scaly, feathery), their color (not sure how expansive it will be) and their gender (male, female, and even herm). The characters will react to you depending on your appearance (and there will be slightly different options available to you). I'm considering allowing name input aswell.

I'm not sure where I'll host it, but I'll come to that when I get there.

Finally, the episodes will have different mini-games. This might slow down the workflow, but I want to make something more than just mindless clickthrough. It won't be too tricky though.

First of all, thanks to everyone who gave their time in helping me out. The data you've provided will help me a lot.

Here's a breakdown of the results, with my own observations...

  1. I have decided to use diffuse-lit backgrounds like traditional 3D environments, but how should the characters look?

Cel-Shaded - 40%
Diffuse-Lit - 17.1%
Advanced Fur Textures - 39%

My my. This was the most important question of the lot I think, and it's a nigh-tie. I'll definitely need to do more research into this one.

2. What kind of style should the characters themselves be in (their actual shape and form)?

Realistic style - 47.6%
Cartoony style - 26.7%
Abstract Japanese style - 21%

A clear winner here.

3. What type of feet do you prefer?

Plantigrade - 32.1%
Digitigrade - 60.4%

Digitigrade is almost twice as popular. I don't really have a preference, so I think I might do a combination of both.

4. What type of genetalia do you prefer?

Human style - 26.2%
Animal style - 68.2%

Wow, a vast majority. I had no idea it would be skewed toward animal style so much. I prefer animal style myself, but I think there's still no harm in keeping the choice.

5. If you could see 3D characters in any artist's style, who's would it be?

Now this one was funny. The results were all across the board - not a single artist stood out. It's amazing how many different artistic styles have their own fans.

6. What is your favorite type of story?

Romance - 33.3%
Action - 47.6%
Mystery - 16.2%
Drama - 2.9%

Quite a predictable one. Though Action gets the gold, it's surprising how close romance is. I'm going to enjoy a number of different styles of storylines throughout the series, but this pushes me in the right direction for the first episode, or perhaps a teaser-trailer.

7. What's your favorite kind of game?

Action - 36.2%
Adventure - 59%
Puzzle - 4.8%

A clear winner here, and quite a relief, if I consider the programming involved in each style. I wouldn't have it any other way.

8. Which gender of character would you like to play as?

Male - 86.1%
Female - 24.1%
Herm - 23.1%

I think this one was a multiple choice. While there's an extreme bias towards male, females and herms need not worry - the only other similar flashes I know of have just male player characters. Mine is going to be different.

9. Which gender of character would you like to pursue a relationship with?

Male - 41.7%
Female - 73.1%
Herm - 27.8%

Another multiple choice. In comparing these results to the last question, it looks like there will mainly be heterosexual relations going on. Again, I want to stress that everyone's going to get a fair shake.

10. What are your favorite fetishes?

I'm just going to list the top 10 here...

Some obvious results and some surprising results here. I'm surprised that tentacles got in there really high. I had no idea they were so popular. I'm also surprised rape is in the top 10. I had some kind of conception that it was a bit... taboo maybe? Not a lot of these fetishes will be so readily prevalent throughout the series. I thought that it might be a useful subject for something like a holiday special.

The pressing matter is - should I go for cel-shaded or fur-plugin? This is really getting to me. I think fur textures would look so cool, but I don't know if it's worth the hassle. I don't even know how much extra time it would take. Presumably, it would take me a while to get to grips with it, but after that, and once the characters are mapped, that would be the only "time overhead", if you get what I mean.

Some people expressed confusion when I talked about the fur textures. Of course, there are plenty of examples of cel-shaded work in my gallery, but the fur textures I'm talking about are along the same lines as Taurin does. His website can be found here...

I myself recently started to learn 3D using blender. Animating is great, modeling and texturing, not so. Do you have any preferance?

Yeah, I released three separate loops. The Complete version has sound added to it. There's also a test animation where she blows a kiss. That's on my FA page aswell.

I use 3D Studio. It's expensive, but there's a legal free version called gmax. It's no longer supported by the company, but I'm sure you can find it somewhere.

It's very advanced, and has lots of modifiers that make animation and modelling much easier. Takes a while to get used to, but it's worth it in the end.

There's probably a correlation... I'd expect most people who voted for Japanese style probably voted for cel-shading, and most people who voted for realistic style voted for realistic fur. Therefore, since you're going for realistic body styles, I recommend realistic fur.

Oh yeah, I didn't think of that. Correlations. I figured that a lot of people might pick cel shaded because they know what that looks like from me.

I'm planning on figuring out the ornatrix plugin. It's a free hair plugin and it seems to have the features I want. It's quite complex, even for a 3D Studio plugin.

The cool thing is that the color of the fur pattern can be determined by a bitmap - once a base texture is applied to the model, ornatrix picks that up and shades each hair based on where it is.

I think it will be worth it. Or, at least, I hope. I'm going to run some tests - I'll create a character and then do comparison materials. I just want to know which would be more enjoyable, because I'm having a hard time deciding myself.

After Renamon encounters Zorori, this is one of the actions that can be taken. I'm thinking of having a kind of star topography menu, where several different activities are available from one root screen.

Does that sound good, or is there a better way to present the animations?

I'm no expert, but I think it would depend on the individual. I would have thought it would be jarring, but then that didn't spoil the digimon hentai show when I first saw that.

I think (again, I'm not expert) that it would have more to do with where the menu was placed rather then should there be one or not. If there is a point in the animation where someone asks 'What do you want to do?' would be better then interupting anything.

One way to avoid this could be a 'play all' button, but then I'm not sure that would work or not with what you want to do.

Well, in each of the scenes I've got a clip which just shows them holding still. This is where I think I might put the buttons.

For example in >>631, before anything is done there's a separate loop that just shows them in that pose breathing and swishing their tails.

Then in each scene there are several stages, all of which are loopable. So I'm thinking that each scene can be a series of loops much like my last Renamon animation.

So, I'm wrapping up the animation. It feels like such a rush to get it finished off finally. These projects are getting longer and longer, and with little indication of the outcome before I render it off, it takes some willpower!

I don't want to prattle on too much about the project itself. I'm thinking I'll save that for a post mortem once the project is well and truly finished.

When I created Zorori, I didn't put so much time into his facial features. What you see here are bitmaps... yeah. Renamon has fully constructed geometric features, and that way, I can use the morpher modifier to smoothly transition facial features. I rushed Zorori, and I'm going to pay for it. Not only will these expressions transition digitally (as in, they will switch immediately with no sense of morphing) it is also difficult to set up. I've basically got a mix material wrapped in a mix material wrapped in a mix material wrapped in... you get the idea. The mix material only supports two materials, so I've got to nest them.

So, if you're creating a character and you think you can get away with a bitmap due to the style of the character, consider how difficult it's going to be to dick around with these fucking mix materials. Seriously, go with the morpher.

Oh well. Looks like fchan gets an advanced screening due to FA being down. Critiques are thoroughly encouraged, however if it's a technical error I probably already know about it.

Things I'm Happy With

0 Most of the animation (apart from a few clipping errors here and there).
0 The materials I used.
0 The cinematography.
0 The scenes I decided to depict.
0 The interface I made (along with that handy quickmenu).

Things I'm Unhappy About

0 The cunnilingus scene looks rushed. No tongue action.
0 I still haven't got the hang of fluids, but the fellatio scene shows I'm heading in

the right direction.
0 That corrupted loop in the missionary scene :(
0 The sound. I'm just not really good at sourcing/editing clips.
0 Zorori's bitmap expressions.
0 Renamon's lack of proper genetalia.
0 That strange 'throbbing' error.
0 Poor 'web version' quality in the video (had to get it to a postable size).

Things I Experimented With

That was great. I only noticed the bitmap expressions when I was looking out for them. That said, Renamons face is fabulous.

I agree with elliot in that the buttons didn't seem to do anything or show signs they were working at all. It wasn't until the second scene when I finally realized it was the way it was made. Some way to confirm a button press would be ideal, but not necessary.

Also the angle from Preview H was changed in the final cut. To showoff Zorori's facial expression I presume, but I preferred the angle in the Preview H cuz you could see more or Renamon getting cummed on :( But that's just my 2 cents.

Overall I think this is a spectacular piece of work. Keep up the awesome job :)

Right. I originally had it so that there was only one button for the loop at a time, and when you went to the next loop, that button disappeared and the next one appeared. However, when I exported this, it didn't work properly.

Well, I wouldn't be allowed to post a link on fchan. Outside sharing's against the rules. I originally converted it from DivX to FLV when it was imported into flash. FLV sucks hard, and that makes it look grubby and artifact-ridden. I then realised that it was too big at high quality, so I lowered the clips to medium quality. The change between high and medium quality is much less dramatic than the change from DivX to FLV. So there's not much point in dishing out a high quality version, unless I were to just rar the video files on their own and upload them.

I noticed that the transitions between some loops seem rough, probably due to a number of factors. While the quality is certainly better-than-average for "amateur" work, it is still significantly behind what I would consider "professional", in terms of movement fluidity, expression (bodily and facial), and environmental interactivity.

If you want some inspirational material, I recommend the Sexual Fantasy Kingdom series, or other professionally released 3D erotic games. While almost none are "furry" per se, you might still benefit from noting the detail work that they implement, and mentally identifying qualities that distinguish a "better" animation.

I'm not saying your work is bad, of course. I just think there's a lot of room for improvement.

If (when) you start your BIG PROJECT, I suggest enlisting the aid of a writer, preferably one whose works you particularly enjoy. It never hurts to have a second opinion, especially when dealing with something as delicate and intricate as a well-developed storyline.

I assume you knew most of these things already, but it's 3am and I'm feeling obstinate. Good night.
