Taral's FChan Guide to Cutopia & Zanydu
File: ToonChan_01.jpg -(150111 B, 1000x332)
150111 150111 No.722 722 1

These were originally posted in /b/ for use. But it was obvious that most of the details were illegible in 300x100 size, so I offered to re-post the images here in /a/. The banners are not numbered in the same order they were posted in /b/ -- rather in the approximate order you might encounter these scenes in the Toonstruck game they're drawn from.

This first shows Drew (an artist trapped in his own work) and his main guy Flux Wildly, still in the King of Cutopia's castle, where he first arrived.

Here Drew and Flux have left the king's castle and have encountered Fluffy-Fluffy Bun-Bun. Fluffy is the main character in a cartoon Drew is employed to draw, but hates. She's sickeningly cute, spoiled, self-centered, and bad tempered. Here we see her weeping in self-pity because Cutopia is being altered into "The Malevolands". Drew and Flux leave as quickly as possible...

Shortly after leaving Fluffy (and their first sight of the Malevolands), Drew and Flux come to the village. It contains a bakery, a tavern, a costume shop of all things, and a game arcade. Which order you go into them for clues to what's happening to Cutopia is up to the player, natch.

This is the costume shop. I think you have to trick or talk the proprietress into letting you have the book she's reading. I forget just why. Note the costumes. Elmer Fudd is pretty obvious. The Martian is less visible. I don't know if its any particular robot or not.

This is the tavern or Irish Pub. (The barkeep is a shamrock.) The trick here is to stop the annoying little mouse from whatever it is he does to annoy. You can't get him in range of the mousetrap though... not unless you've got a song in your heart (hint).

Here Drew and Flux are in the bakery. The two bakers are in a funk because they've lost all their dough and can't tune their piano... because they've lost their "do", get it? Well, that's perhaps the low point of the game's humour.

And this is the arcade. You get to play one of the games, but I don't recall that it has any influence in the play of Toonstruck. What you do have to do is score well on the measure of your strength to the right.

...and the game of Wacman. Pretty easy, really, unlike Toonstruck itself.

After leaving the village, Drew and Flux come to the country, and have a charming chat with a gay scarecrow on their way to the barn in the background.

The animals in the barn are all pretty square. But there's rancid butter that comes in useful later, and next time the guy's meet this lifestock it'll be a lot livlier. "Getting closer" foreshadows" not only their next encounter but the end of this series of banners, when they find FChan (if not the cause of Wackyland's malevolification).

Drew and Flux are at the crossroads leading to Zanydu. I don't know if it's a town or what. There's Jim's Gym, the Wacme store (which is tricky to get in), and a fish toilet (which isn't quite what it sounds like). The middle path leads to a dead end, but you have to go there anyway, for some reason or other.

Jim's Gym and the fish toilet. You have to be careful what you catch in the later.

The Wacme store. "The Future of Abuse Technology!" Gizmo Drew is looking at is in fact essential to his quest, to find out who is malevolating Wackyland. What he doesn't know is that he needs something from the display case as well.

At some point the guys enter a part of Wackyland that has been malevolized, but before they can go far they meet B.B. Wolf. B.B. is suave, blackhearted inspite of his affected manners, and hillariously mispoken. But B.B. won't let them enter his realm just yet.

Once Drew and Flux are finally invited by B.B. for dinner, they wish he hadn't. There's a way out of the soup... but you have to rock the boat.

At some point in the game you come to this improbable bridge. It takes you to another part of Wackyland or Zanydu, whichever is which, where the end-game begins.

On the other side is the "bad side" of town, as I remember. There's a fix-it shop, with a bad tempered fixer-upper who mightily resembles a Dalek. There's a rather sad bowling alley, as well, and a jail where sooner or later the guy's end up. Off in the distance is a dark castle.

Actually... this should come before 17, as it's outside the fix-it shop, showing the bowling alley, jail, and dark castle mentioned above. Note the bouncer outside the bowling alley. Looks a lot like Gossamer, the Warner Bros. "monster" to me.

Having gained entry to the dark castle, Drew and Flux face a whole new level of difficult problems before they face their ultimate opponent. I never got that far... But I recall being in a dungeon, climbing up through the pipes from the furnace, a shower, a guard's room, an abbatoir, a library, various halls, and a strange room padded in black, with a viscious clown who torments balloon animals before popping them. Figuring out what to do with the clown is one of the obstacles I never got beyond.

Last one! I may have given up on the solution for Cutopia/Zanydu/Wackyland's dilemma, but at least I found sompelace with deeply disturbed animals! FChan at last!

It was of course that feeble joke that got me started doing the Toonstruck banners. Originally I only meant to do four or six, to give the flavour of the game. Then it occured to me that following the banners to the last one was in a way like playing the game. The banners would appear, one by one, until finally you got to the end. Too, I received a bit of encouragement from others, who remembered the game as fondly as I did. Maybe one of them can tell how in Sam Hill the thing ends!

Oops. Crap. I thought this was /b, and deleted that for fear a giant image would appear in rotation. Sorry! ._.

No problem. Simple matter of a second upload. I can understand how you might mistake the page for /b/ since it was full of banners...

Flux wildly or flux capacitor? Which would you rather see Christopher lloyd with?

As long as he doesn't have flux (the flu).

The way to get past the clown is to pick up his nose and "polish" it with one of the Cloroform wipes you may have picked up somewhere in the castle (don't exactly remember where) to knock Spike out. Then steal his pin, and fill your rubber glove (and one extra balloon, if you want) with Helium. Give it a try and see who you'll suddenly sound like! You'll need the voice-change later.

Hope that helps! I played the game through to the end twice already, so feel free to let me know if you get stuck anywhere. I'll check this topic from time to time.

I downloaded a couple of "cheats" from Toonstruck websites -- but I'll never actually use them. At least not on my system. Toonstruck won't run on XP unless you fiddle with some software called DOSbox -- all of which is far beyond my computer competancy. Best if I got an obsolete system to install Windows 98 on again, and use that for old games.

Runs with the awful ME but words bubbles go on and off. Still playable.

No.784 - Link Reply Report 784 2

My system is running XP Pro, but I still have my old copy of Windows 98, should I pick up an obsolete system to run it on. Seems like a lot of trouble to play a game, though. I'd probably have to start over, having forgotten so much.
