I use ACDSee Classic (shareware, download.com). It allows me to
search in subfolders
does a fast incremental zoom 7-5000% with +/-
shows an optional status bar in fullscreen mode with path,size,dimensions,zoom level
remembers previous folders you've moved/copied files to
gives you a random or sequntial image in your folder, folder & selected subfolders, or in your search results
Because I can rename, move, copy, delete & make folders, I also use it in place of Windows Explorer most of the time.
The zoom is fast but jagged. For smooth zoom, I use Picwalker (freeware) http://www.oma-penny.com/software.php which has smooth, fast, incremental Lanczos zoom. It also has continous pages option, so you can view a comic smoothly down or across, as you choose.
