How would one go about trying to find an artist to draw a comic version of a story? I ask because my friend has been looking for years without success I dont suppose anyone here would be interested or knows of someone/a way do they?

Most artists are not interested in drawing long comic stories. This is something a lot of comic readers don't realize, but a comic page generally takes as much work as a full-fledged commission of the same complexity. PER PANEL.

If your friend is willing to pay for that work (keep in mind, I was a sequential art student, and the prices they quoted to me AS A STUDENT should be my minimum were about $300 per page, so don't be surprised if an artist wants $100+), they may be able to find someone through FurBid or an artist- or comic commmunity on, say, LiveJournal, which is where I personally have the most experience. They could also try contacting cartooning students through school home pages (I know of http://www.serieskolan.se, personally, but other specialized schools should have the same kind of pages).

If your friend wants the pages for free... I'd say the fastest way would be taking art classes. Absolutely no offense intended, but as I said, drawing comics is a lot of work, and most artists, even the ones who normally draw gift art left and right, wouldn't want to draw a longer comic story for someone else without compensation.

what about a percentage of the sales?

That depends on contract, but unless you've written scripts for Eisner (figuratively), don't expect an artist to work for you against a promise of percentage of the sales. I'm sure there's a slight possibility you COULD find someone, but it's very unlikely. Drawing takes a lot of time, I'm usually lucky to finish one comic page in a day unless I start stressing and do absolutely nothing else, and that's at a fairly low level of detail with very little in the way of backgrounds.

it would also be prudent to mention something else.

the furry comic market is in a world of hurt right now. getting something published that is not part of an already ongoing series is very close to impossible.

I wish that was only the furry comic market... At least around here, you have to be a ghost artist or do badly-drawn autobiography to get any work as a cartoonist. Which is why I'm stressing that getting an artist for free is probably next to impossible.

>>3 As badly as furry comics sell, you could not sell enough to make the amount of work that would be needed to do the comic. Diamond's ruling hit furry comics hard for a reason after all.

what ruling, got details please?

>>8 To make it simple, a comic has to sell a set amount every month or they will not be featured in Diamond's catalog. And Diamond is the -only- game in town if your trying to get your comic into any store within the USA and a few outside the US too.

I forget the exact numbers but the only anthro/somewhat anthro comics that could possably meet quota is Usgai, Genius (Maybe) and Gold Digger

>>9 and albedo. but as gallacci is kind of a flake on his deadlines, they dropped him again. even if his excuse this time (bev having cancer) is reasonable.

Well, if you befriend an artist, (like I did) and the artist just happens to have the hots for you (ok it's getting less likely)
then you might be able to get a few panels for free ;-)
