I've observed that most furry artists fall into three general categories:

Artists: people who were artists first, and discovered the furry fandom through their art. Most of the fandom's skilled and moneymaking artists fall into this category. Most have gone to animation school or plan to go to animation school. If these people weren't drawing furries, they'd be drawing something else.

Fan artists: people who were furry fans first, and take up art because they want to draw their fantasy characters. These people tend to draw for themselves and their close friends. If these people weren't furry fans, they would never have picked up a pencil.

Wannabe artists: these people see big name furry artists surrounded by fans at conventions, and with fan clubs on the internet, and want some of that status for themselves. These people decide that they want to be artists before they've even picked up a pencil! They usually end up flooding sites like PlayMouse with generic porn. Many stamp their art with a logo which took more time then the picture itself, because building name recognition is their primary goal.

That's pretty spot on. Just don't name names, but it's pretty spot on. Three categories pretty much cover it.
