Art style

How are you gentlemen,

The artwork you find here ranges in the style of execution from cartoony all the way to pretty damn real. I'm not going to harsh on anyone for choosing any particular style, here - I'm just observing this.

What would you say are the relative merits and faults of toony vs. realistic artwork?

As a doodler myself, I will tell you first that I prefer to draw in the realistic style. It's how I learned. I will say, though, that composing images seems to take much longer for realistic work because of the need to account for all the little details - undercoats or fur highlights, for example, or the glow of eyes.

But what do I know? I'm only one guy. That's why I'm asking y'all, I would like to understand the prevailing mood.

Make your time.

I lean toward realistic.  They still have a cartoony aspect too them but i try and make the lighting and anatomy realistic, it ends up with that cartoony aspect because of how quick i draw, and the mediums i use.

I prefer realistic looking but there are many cartoony looking artists i like just as much if not more.  it's when the characters start resembling a real dog that it get's TOO real

If we did, it didn't have such a great opening.

We've had EVERY discussion a while back. We're redoing them for the new people.

I have a preference that's somewhere in between the two.  I like for things to have that kind of cartoony exageration, yet maintain a certain aspect of realism.

Also, nothing wrong with having old discussions again.  This seems to be one of the few topics this place can have people talk about that WON'T erupt into a flamewar.

Toony = less need for anatomical correctness, less of a chance of going into the uncanny valley. More people tend to find it cute.

Realistic = much more impressive if done right, rarely done right, 90% of the time dips into the uncanney valley and creeps people out.

Think it's always good to know real portions to apply to toon work, you can "get away" with toon like works without knowledge of real anatomy of anything alive or dead, but if you know what your working on inside out you can always add what you want to give it an individual feel.

Best to know both if you're thinking career wise, art world is competitive, if you can do every kind of design, you get more monies :D

Arjuna, you said "it's when the characters start resembling a real dog that it get's TOO real".

I don't think I understand. How do you mean "resembling a real dog", through things like body structure, or behavior (e.g., not human-like), or...?

Anyway: >>8
Drawing is a hobby. My career is neurophysiology and behavior. :3

I think Arjuna meant when it's like the person just drew an actual dog/animal's head, with no attempt to give the head/face any sort of humanoid features.  I must admit I find that kind of thing a little disturbing, myself.

For me..realistic must be done REAL well..otherwise I hate it.

I prefer toony whenever it comes to most artwork..much cleaner looking to me...plus I seem to like cuteness over anything.  I've seen a few realistic to semi realistic that I have liked...and several who skirt the line really tend to be enjoyable...Doug Winger really skirts the line..with alot of realistic coloring and shading..but usually toony proportions...Zen has an amazing artstyle to me..and he usually skips between realistic and toony in general..doing one or the other.  Karbinger has a more realistic style (to me).

In the end..I think it just comes down to how its done..however I find I tend to prefer simple over complicated...something vague is more appealing to me..than something well defined.

Exactly.  My characters kindof resemble especially expression wise kindof more like humans with animal characteristics, because i like humans a lot, and if i want human porn, i'll look at real porn, if i want furry porn, i draw it.  It's just that when the character starts looking just like a realistic animal with opposing thumbs and the arms/head of a human it starts to be a real turnoff.
