How would you convert a BMP image to a more used  file type like JPEG? I'm using Gimpshop.

I use IrFanView.

I use the trial version of LViewPro. *shrug*

The easiest way is to just change the file extension of the picture, but that can corrupt the file. Hasn't happened to me yet, though.

using gimpshop (scripted gimp to echo photoshop).... ((just checked my gimp)) hit the drop down and save it as a jpeg?

Step 1. Open file.
Step 2. File>Save As...   Choose JPEG in the extension list.
Step 3. ????
Step 4. Profit!

This is the worst answer possible.

And why is that? It's worked for me dozens of times without doing anything hsrmful.

I mean, just because YOU fail with technology doesn't mean everyone has to

Well, for one thing, I prefer png files, since they're not lossy.

So you were being serious D:

Thing is, it didn't work for you.
It won't convert the file at all. You end up with a bmp with a jpg extension, not a jpg. Some programs will recognise it's a bmp and read it as such, others will try to read it as a jpeg and will fail (this is the 'corruption' you were talking about).

I laughed. Unfortunately, it was one of those laughs that goes on much too long and turns into hysterical weeping. "You LOSE! Good day, sir!"</wonka>

While changing the file extention from .bmp to .jpg sounds great... easy... and *seems* to work, the data inside doesn't change.  BMP and JPEG are entirely different formats. For one thing, BMP isn't compressed.  At all.  Just because whatever you use to view pictures isn't dumb enough to rely on the file extention doesn't mean you should start (wrongly) flaming people who correct you :)

and those who rename bmp's to jpg are amoung those who do not understand technology-
the files are signifigantly different both in compression (or lack thereof in non rll bmp's) and in encoding.

I dont even think it matters what prog you open it in, irfan, mspain, whatever, the save as - jpg works

I just want to know just HOW flaming erupted about a simple tech question.

Good lord the internet is full of drama-queens.

I think a little fuss is justified when someone gives faulty tech support and then proceeds to stubbornly stick to their faulty advice after being corrected.

Hey, I'm not starting drama this time. I'm just pointing out the reason behind the flaming.

Flaming? Care to point out all the posts that are gratuitously insulting? I saw mostly explanations of why the the advise of "just change the file extension" was wrong with no flames contained therein.

Sometimes, the drama comes from within.
