There are hypocrites in ever faction of modern society, especially when dealing with interest-specific groups like Japanese animation fans, furry fans, Star Trek fans, or to a lesser extent, religious nuts. Basically, there are going to be people who will treat you like one of their own when you meet them face to face, but as soon as you turn your back they'll find all possible fault they can with you. As well, like you stated, if you say the wrong thing to someone about his or her beliefs or interests, they will defend them, sometimes violently and offensively and slanderously because you took a jab at something they obviously feel very strongly about.
Humanity in general needs to be more tolerant AND accepting of itself and its participants in order for our society to evolve. Once people understand that they can't change each other, but they CAN change themselves, we might just start moving forward.
