I was just browsing around here as usual, when suddenly one of those "skip this ad" full page advertisements came up that I see here occasionally.  Immediately afterward, my computer slowed down to the point of mouse lag, and my spyware scanner detected about four dozen instances...I don't think this was just a coincidence on my end.

There's a link to the Opera browser homepage in the index bar on the left... if Firefox doesn't cut it for you, Opera might.  Very nice browser.

..Who said I wasn't using Firefox?

Plus, shouldn't Fchan be getting ads that don't murder someone's PC instead of it being the browser's problem?

Fchan's free, man.  Don't look gift horses in the mouth.  And I don't get these "murderous" ads, and I use Firefox, so I can only assume that for whatever reason, the problem is on YOUR end.

I'm not complaining about Fchan having ads, i'm complaining about the malicious ads.  I dont' care if they're rare, the fact is that they're there.  If the ads the site gets isn't under Fchan's jurisdiction, i'll live with it, but it sucks having to navigate through with a nervous eye on your scanner icon when there's something that could be done.

What is FChan supposed to do about these ads? The fact that they do NOT pop up for me indicates that they are not attached to FChan in any way at all.  Is it possible you have a cookie somewhere that is allowing these ads to follow you around?  What's your ISP? Do you use Earthlink, or AOL, or one of the other big companies?  Do you have anti-malware/spyware software installed? I use Webroot's SpySweeper and avast! antivirus home edition, and they keep me pretty safe.

I'm STILL getting them on Opera.

M'aiq the Liar at 23 Jun 2007: 16:42

OK, so it's not Firefox.  Do you use AOL, or MSN? Have you tried cleaning out your cookies folder?

12Report
Axle at 23 Jun 2007: 16:44

No on AOL and MSN.  Cookies are auto-cleared on exit.

They're imbedded into the website.  Simple as that.  Next time one pops i'll post the code.

Wait, it just did it to me once, when I was browsing back through the Adam Wan thread in /s/, I opened it in a new window, and I got one of those ads.  Firefox was blocking the rest of them though (little message bar saying "Firefox has blocked a popup on this site" or somesuch), so I didn't get a massive profusion of adspam, just the one.  It was like an entirely different webpage, like FChan's link had been hijacked.  I closed the window, and opened the Adam Wan thread in a new window again, and it didn't do it a second time.  This is strange.  I very seriously doubt the FChan folks would approve of what is happening here... Interestingly enough, I had NEVER had this happen to me before on FChan, before you posted this topic about it.  I'm not sure what to make of that.

meh... It's just a randomly generated pop-up. the ad you get is random and how often you get it is also random. I don't think they pop up often because I've only had them thrice or so.

some of the adds are bad seeds. they are evil. they suck the live blood out of teh internetz... just deal with them! or use a different OS :P

Well, I haven't had another one pop up on me yet.

As for using a different OS... there's a few things that Linux simply cannot do.  (At least not without setting up an emulator or whatever that takes a rocket scientist to set up properly so you can play Oblivion, or Guild Wars, or Mechwarrior 4 Mercs on Linux)  Microsoft has us by the balls, for now T_T

Just got another...And yes, I do all the basic things everyone should, I have a plethora of scanner/blocker type programs, I basically keep my security settings so high It blocks itself sometimes..This time I didn't get any spyware with it though, just a truckload of painful lag.

Plus, what good does another OS do when the ad is called by a /browser function/?

Use the same browser on a different OS and you get the same thing.

I just got the same exact kind of popup ad, but not here - it happened to me on dea/DF/rog, a torrent site.  I don't know whether it's just following me around, or if it's simply set up shop at /df/ as well.

I'll be writing up a FAQ on ads later on, might take till tomorrow though.

I'm currently getting these 'Lover Calculator' full-window ads all the time on Fchan, which is getting rather annoying. Generally I'd think that ads which don't stay in their frames where they belong are a bad thing, but I could accept the odd full-window ad. When they're appearing multiple times per session, though, it's really getting old. Yes, I have cookies enabled.

>>20  Same thing.  I wasn't seeing these full-screen ads I saw people talking about until a day or two ago.  Now I get them almost every time I load a page.

I finally just disabled Javascript for fchan.me.  Of course, now I don't see even the more "tasteful" banner ads - but that's not my fault.
