I had to click through THREE "skip this ad" pages to finally view this topic. :/

I had the same problem and resolved it like this:

If you use IE just add *.adbrite.com to your Restricted Sites zone (Tools > Internet Options > Security Tab > Restricted zone > Sites button).

There are people here that actually don't use Firefox? Heresey.

I actually prefer IE7 to Firefox 2. While Firefox does have some nice addons (IE does too) I find Internet Explorer's interface to be MUCH better. IE's interface acts the same as the rest of the Windows UI and it seems more responsive (see http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/archives/000789.html for more details).  I also think IE does a better job with tabs--they just feel "smoother" or something.

Admittedly for web development Firefox's Firebug addon is a must-have, but for my day-to-day stuff I use IE.

Seconded.
Also, most people who use IE don't go around trying to flame-convert people to the browser like i've seen with the majority of Firefox users.

I have some messed up version of IE7 that came with the computer. I basically don't have back, forward, or refresh buttons and can't even bring them out.

Thus, I use firefox because right-clicking is annoying to me. :P

Adblock and noscript for FireFox rock, I see the web the way it was in the early 1990's.  Text and relate images.   No fluff.

Meanwhile ensure that nothing on your computer, network AND isp is blocking any cookies. Without cookies the ad scripts can't tell wether you saw an interstitial at that day or not and will jsut randomly serve one up.

>> ie vs. ff
Most who know me, will know i think both are shite and that only opera is the holy grail. ;D

Anyhow. Looking at google statistics tells me that this month ie users are only 37% of all visitors here. Last month they were 39%, and they've been slowly dwindling. Why is that relevant? As soon as that number goes below 25% i will be blocking ie completely on web server level.

At that time i will FINALLY be able stop bowing to ie's shitty bugs that force me to jump through numerous time-consuming hoops, just so all of fchan's features work in all 3 major browsers.

And a little side comment regarding native feel and speed:
1. Look around a bit, there are skins for all browsers. My current opera browser looks like it escaped from Win98 and had a little shag with Win2K on the way to the present.
2. As far as i can tell Opera feels faster than IE, due to more responsive rendering engine.

When I talk about the UI I really mean the underlying rendering engine.  While IE uses the native Windows common controls (or well-written custom controls), Firefox uses a completely separate system that relies completely on custom controls which do not act like any other controls in Windows.

One example is drop-down menus which do not act like Windows menus. Another is the password field which in Firefox still uses asterisks (*) while the rest of Windows uses bullets (•).

I tried Opera once, don't remember what I didn't like about it.

If you feel it's alright to make me jump through hoops, just so you can have bullets instead of asterikses, then i can only wish you good luck in life and hope you never address me again...

Sorry if you thought I was ranting at/about you or Fchan.  As a web developer myself I understand the pain that's often associated with getting a site to work correctly in all the major browsers.  If you choose to stop supporting IE, that's your decision to make.

All I was doing was explaining why I don't care for the Firefox UI.  Admittedly the examples I gave aren't really that important in the Big Picture, but they are just that -- examples.

Reading over my post again I'm not sure why you thought there was any malice on my part.  Sorry I guess.

He's probably not thinking it's malice, it just looks like you are making your decision on the least important and flat out most retarded factors possible. Kinda like people who judge games ENTIRELY on how many pixel shaders they abuse, instead of how well they play.

That's quite a nitpick there really.  The differences don't bother me at all.  Of course I use both a Mac and a PC and I've been through just about every browser you can think of...

My first brower was Lynx on a VAX minicomputer.  After that I used NCSA Mosaic on the Macintosh (those were the days!).  Netscape came next.  IE was only used when I had no choice on some locked down computers on campus.  When the dark days of Netscape (5 or 6 I think) came around and it's horrible bloating that killed off Netscape, I started looking for alternatives.  I used a Mac at home and started using Opera for a bit.  It wasn't bad, but then iCab came out and I really liked that browser a lot better.  Then you had the pre-firefox mozilla days.  On the PC it was called Phoenix.  On the Mac I used Camino, which was probably one of the fastest browsers I ever used.  Eventually Phoenix changed to Firefox and then they had a decent Mac port and I ended up using that.

I far prefer Firefox for it's features as well as better security on the PC.  I saw someone talking about IE doing better tabs.  IE borrowed the whole idea from Firefox.  You wouldn't have tabs in IE if Firefox/Mozilla had not made them popular.

*sigh*

Okay, I should have known better than to bring up a debate nearly as religious as Linux vs Windows vs Macs.  I thought it would be possible for me to explain why I prefer IE without it going this way but I guess not.

I've used a lot of different browsers as well (Mosaic being the first) and up until version 6 Netscape was my preferred browser (I imagine that's the case with a lot of people).  With that I changed from Netscape to IE5.5.  Recently I installed Vista to try it out (visually pretty, functionally not impressed) and it came with IE7.  I've used Firefox a fair bit before (usually when I wanted tabs on my XP machine or doing web development) but at the end of the day I go back to IE.

I'm not saying one is better than the other or anything like that.  As much as I regret it now I want to be clear: those examples I gave are just two small and easily visible differences between the Firefox UI model and the native operating system of which I use. They present the larger problem and reason behind why I prefer IE and _nothing more_.

Anyway, tl;dr but I don't want people thinking because I like bullets so much better than asterisks, Xeno should go and redesign the entire site to match.  My *only* goal was to give a *short* explanation as to why I still use IE when it's so chic to use an alternative. My comment about Opera was honest -- I really don't remember what about it I didn't care for. Maybe I should install it again. I'm not even going to get into the "feature war" of who-thought-of-it-first.

I never even knew we had ads here... I haven't seen an ad anywhere in... well, a year or so.

THAT's why I use Firefox.
If you don't like ads, you should too.
Just download the Adblock extension and filterset.G updater, and never see an ad again.
Firefox is also much faster than IE at rendering, and faster still if you tweak it out or use the fasterfox extension.
It's more secure than IE. In two years of using firefox, I have had ZERO spyware infections. The addition of NoScript makes Firefox impenetrable.
Firefox is worlds better for web development and modding.
The tabbed browsing in Firefox (with the right extension) is also far superior to IE. I frankly didn't care for the Firefox 2 tabs, but you can configure them however you want with TabControl.

Also, IE7, while better than IE6, still has nothing on Firefox. Their tabbing is a cheap knockoff of Firefox's, and while they've made a lot of progress on FINALLY supporting 21st century web standards, they still have a ways to go.

The Firefox UI is functionally SUPERIOR to the IE one. I can't see the fact that IE's is more aesthetically similar to the native OS as a reason to prefer it. If you're just too used to the IE interface, then I would suggest that you start getting used to a better one, such as Firefox or opera, and see where that takes you.

After two years of using Firefox, I couldn't possibly go back to IE... I feel like I'm going to hemorrhage or something anytime I try to cope with the inferior IE interface and features at a public terminal. It is MUCH easier to transition from IE to Firefox than it is to transition from Firefox back to IE.

Actually, I've never seen said ad. not once in my entire fchan experience.

btw, now that you mention firefox... /r/
