"At any rate, when I learned there'd be a Halloween convention called FurFright at Waterbury's Grand Hotel I immediately e-mailed a request for a press pass, and got a polite-yet-firm response discussing their strict no-media policy (common among Furry gatherings, I learned, since the Vanity Fair story)."

Not going to gain acceptance that way.

"The day's first discussion panel, advertised as an "icebreaker," was moderated by a man in his 40s who wore jeans and a Trix Rabbit shirt, and called himself Wally Wabbit."

Oh god...

"Another room showed animal-themed movies like Chicken Run all day."

...

"Skunk suggested I attend the "Friday Furpocalypse"

I almost want to stop reading right there.

"Still, none of that sexual openness was visible to me. At 11:30 p.m. I attended an adults-only panel called "Safety Furst."

Christ.

Anyway, the article was well written and it's nice to see someone not sensationalizing everything for once. That's the main advantage to the internet media I think...anything on tv WILL be sensationalized. On blogs and stuff you can find more realistic stories that aren't just trying to compete for ratings.

Holy Crap, a bit more coverage like that, and maybe we'll get that "Mom's Seal of Approval" the kids are always after, and before you know it we'll be trendy and mainstream.

I'm scared.

From the sound of it, this year's FurFright was not the fandom's proudest moment.  How are we ever going to gain any respect when it is only those in the fandom that claim that that respect even exists?  There are reasons behind every stereotype, but this has become ridiculous...

YEAH!  We should demand that Furry Fans receive the same degree of respect as Ttrekkies! Err... As Anime Cosplayers!  Um... Maybe... Klingons? SCA?

Well, as long as they don't start comparing us to Goths, we're ahead of the game.

I don't use anything else than finest dwarven alcohol to fuel my explosion attacks. :|

I still loled. :p

Also, uh, can someone explain to me what's so bad about that article and how that wasn't the fandom's most proud moment? I'd say the message is quite clear: Yea, there is some weird shit, but it's not like the whole thing is a disgusting mess of weird shit.

I think you're the first person to actually *read* the article.  As the second person to do so, I agree that it was actually pretty good.  No sensationalism or anything other than "here's what happened".

Damn, I have to say that, as a furry, I expected worse things than what this guy reported. o_O  Then again, i've never really been to a convention, but the way people I know talk about them, they seem more scandelous than this..

uh whats so wrong/scary about that? it would be a great thing for us closet furs.

Wouldnt have to keep off myspace anymore, worrying about people coming up on our FA accounts haha..

Furry mainstream would be the Sh|t!

>>12 Perhaps your experience with the fandom has been witnessing it primarily through the distorting lens of the internet and not through actual involvement? The people you know, have they ever been to a convention either? Of do they just offer their subjective opinions that tend to play up..what's it called...*drama?*
