Came across the following events listing in the weekly Village Voice: "All Fur One Answer the call of the wild Hey, jump into that chipmunk suit or dress up like your pet Shih Tzu and get ready to party! This time, though, do it for a good furry cause. Friends of Snuffy, the NY charitable organization that works to improves the lives of pets and strays is throwing the Snuffy Animal dance benefit party [Wed Jan 30]... Attendees should come dressed in full animal attire, and the furball that's judged the sexiest animal wins a sweet two-night stay and dinner fort two at the Emerson Resort & spa in the Hudson Valley ... www.friendsofsnuffy.com" ; This doesn't appear to be a specifically 'furry' event, originating with an animal charity - I wonder if they're aware and/or trying to appeal to furs with it? (I just may show up for this in my skunk jacket.) Maybe it's just me, but I don't see a single smirk in the above posting, just a good-natured acceptance of folks with chipmunk suits in their closet - including mentioning 'judged the sexiest animal' without an 'ewww'? Thank you Village Voice!

You're aware that animal costumes existed long before one even thought about the term "furry"? Just like no director in whose movies a wolf appears is a fur, this event has nothing to do with furries or their "acceptance".

Could be; I'm curious if this event might attract people who have no idea 'furry' exists but might jump right in once they hear about it - a recruiting party as it were. Plus I suspect the person who wrote the newspaper listing knows of furry even if the event organizers don't.

This is why a lot of people hate furries..Because of people who, everytime they see a movie, game, or book with a slightly anthro animal character, automatically figure it's some kind of fan service to furries.

>>4 I agree. It is really obnoxious how this fandom claims ownership over anything not human and jumps to radical conclusions because they are so desperate to be accepted by a society that would rather not even know furries exist. Ever had to deal with a furry that claims every single person who dresses up as a mascot at disneyland is a "closet-furry"? Yeah, that shit gets old fast.

>>6 Heh... I was thinking the exact same thing. In fact, my original reading of the event copy consisted almost entirely of "OMG who would name a rescue organization 'Friends of Snuffy'?!"

>>5 Sorry to disappoint you, but I just heard back from the event's organizer: Hi Joe! Sorry for the delay in getting back to you- we have been a bit overwhelmed with preparations for the event! We didn't have the furry community specifically in mind when we planned this event but we were aware of them and wanted to reach out. We have long been admirers of the creativity of the furry costume culture and when we brainstormed this event, we were sure to send a press release to Flayrah.com. Thank you for helping us spread the word- you may want to mention to any of your friends that tickets may be purchased online at: www.friendsofsnuffy.com as we are expecting a huge turnout! Best, Jen Dragon Secretary Pro Tem, Friends of Snuffy PS: If you have a myspace profile, consider being our friend!www.myspace.com/friendsofsnuffy
