If you want to draw for the sake of creating artwork and such, I recommend sticking to an ordinary pencil and paper, or get a tablet.

Mmhmm, pen and paper is the best place to learn but if you need to go digital for whatever reason (And there are reasons), "gimp" is a widely used free paint package similar to Photoshop; never used it persoanlly though. OpenCanvas is very lightweight and specially designed for drawing with a pen tablet; although limited in features it does it's the drawing part extremely well.

GIMP is decent, if you want to get a feel similar to Photoshop. I prefer Photoshop (or even GIMP) for more specifically detailed digital paintings, and prefer Open Canvas for anything from sketches to washed pictures. I like to think of Photoshop as similar to acrylic paint and Open Canvas to watercolor, because of my own settings... But yeah, get GIMP and Open Canvas, figure out what you're comfortable with, and then just go. Someone have a link to OC 1.1? anything newer is pay for use after your trial runs out.

>>5 http://wistinga.online.fr/opencanvas/ is what I use for random doodling. Handles pressure on wacom tablets, doesn't work with the eraser on the stylus.. not that I use it a lot. Corel Painter X is five hundred dollars and not only does it not handle the eraser, it also does not work with the pressure on my wacom. http://apps.corel.com/painterx/us/index.html Art Rage 2 handles both and has a free version. The pay-for version is cheap. http://www.ambientdesign.com/artragedown.html

oC works with the eraser for me. Or did before I annihilated it. Stop sticking things in your mouths, children! D:< Painter is supposed to actually imitate *some* form of paint, right? Is it worth it? I'm gonna try the artrage thing for the fun of it. Yay.

>>9 ...Uh, Painter works just fine. You probably didn't install the latest drivers or bother configuring the damn thing.

>>12 Naw, I have the latest drivers, and they are properly configured. I just don't have the fanciest or most expensive wacom tablet with over nine thousand driver options. The eraser should work natively with most applications. I don't know, I'll keep looking for a solution.
