If you are going to do something then you should strive to be the best regardless of whether you are doing it for fun/profit. Half-assing something you are particularly passionate about just makes you an idiot.
As for "good furry" I agree that most of it is good because it ISNT directly "furry", rather it's simply anthromorph characters. The problem with furry writing is that the people involved are usually so ingrained into the fandom they can't think BEYOND the fandom to make an interesting story.
