Optimism vs Cynicism

1 Report	at 15 Jul 2008: 16:45 I'm wondering what the cynic to optimist ratio is on this site so let's have fun with a little survey/discussion; 1. Do you consider yourself a cynic or optimist? 2. What are the advantages of cynicism and optimism in your opinion? 3. Are you content with life? 4. What species are you?(if you have a fursona/character) 5. How old are you? 6. Have you switched from cynicism to optimism or vice versa? Personally, I find optimism to be superior because while it's easier to get taken advantage of you dream bigger, have bigger ideas, are willing to take bigger chances and thus reap the possible benefits. Cynics on the other hand tend to be very reserved and require proof of everything before doing anything. I don't think i've ever heard of someone who earned their riches as being a cynic but I could be wrong. Discuss away.

4 Report	at 15 Jul 2008: 17:22 1. I'm about 70% cynical, but maintain a side of optimism in the big picture. 2. Cynicism just appeals to the realist in me. If something that you're optimistic about goes wrong, it can be more painful than just accepting the negative. 3. Somewhat, I feel like I could be happier had I made some different choices in life. 4. Don't have one, 100% human. 5. 19 6. I'm bipolar, so it can switch based on my mood. 7. Cynics are often less happy, but optimists can be deluded about what they can achieve, often causing them to miss the best solution. I can understand what you're saying about optimism, but you can take it too far. Being optimistic can bring you happiness, but you need to be realistic and cautious sometimes. Like they say, ignorance is bliss, but ignoring that oncoming semi is fallacy. Actually, I don't think they say that. Cool topic.

Cynicism can only win arguments, but not hearts. 3. Are you content with life? No, I look forward to what comes next though. 4. What species are you?(if you have a fursona/character) I suppose if I were to pic a fursona it would probably be an Arctic Fox at least until I decided I was done with that form. 5. How old are you? 24 6. Have you switched from cynicism to optimism or vice versa? You can always have both. "This world is going down the tubes and there is no hope for its recovery, but its okay because that really isn't going to ruin my day! We'll all be laughing from the skies when those suckers who didn't build an airship are burning alive =D"
7 Report	at 15 Jul 2008: 20:46 1. I consider myself an optimist on the whole, but in certain issues I can be rather cynical. Overall I am optimistic. 2. Optimism is more fun and keeps me energetic. I don't mind having my hopes dashed because I am an optimist, and know that a solution will always present itself. 3. I am content, but that is not to say I don't seek for anything or have ambitions. I recognize life as a game to enjoy, I'm not worried about getting the high score. 4. Human, lol. If I were a furry I'd be a panther, eagle, or orca, but I don't have a character or anything. 5. Just about 20. 6. In furry, I might be called a cynic, although even then I would prefer the term jaded. In just about everything else I'm an optimist.

I don't like to dash other people's dreams, but I am quite aware of the fact that we're all fucked. 2. What are the advantages of cynicism and optimism in your opinion? As people have said before, cynicism wins arguments. In other words, cynicism is usually a more realistic outlook (depending upon the situation of course). However, you shouldn't harm someone else's productivity if you do have a negative outlook on life. 3. Are you content with life? My life is great thus far. I really don't have any complaints with my current state. However, I am very disappointed in the world, everyone around me, myself for being content with my great quality of life while others are miserable and live in deplorable conditions. 4. What species are you?(if you have a fursona/character) ... I don't have a fursona. :( 5. How old are you? Ehh... I'm a college student. I guess that's enough information about that. 6. Have you switched from cynicism to optimism or vice versa? It's very hard to be optimistic, but I try to live my life wearing that mask. Sometimes my cynicism boils through when I need to discuss something with my friends, coworkers, etc. Smiles are contageous... even if they're manufactured smiles pasted on your face so that you don't ruin anyone else's day.

14 Report	at 17 Jul 2008: 13:46 1. cynic 2. cynisism allows for cynical humor and an understanding of the true side olife others don't get 3. my life is good but i'm so tired of rich people complaining that they don't have enough 4. i am a fox in the real world but not anything on the internet 5. 18 6. as a kid i was an optimist because i was picked on so much had to think positive or take anti-depresents but as i got older i just said who cares and took power away from the biggest bully in the entire school and laughed at his pain!! =P

This happens a lot in the business world where people can do all the critical thought possible but still not be able to come to a conclusion that makes an innovative idea worth investing into unless you are willing to take a big risk. As for cynics...I think they just need to learn to keep their mouth shut at times. It gets old hearing constant negativity about everything and anything. Just because you can't enjoy life doesn't mean you have the right to stop other people from enjoying it whether they are 'logical' or not. Some of the worst religious/scientific/insertlabelhere fanatics are cynics. With that said SOME cynicism is a good thing and SOME optimism is a required ingredient in life for those wanting to invent and innovate or just be happy.
