Why do furries feel the need to argue?

I'll start off with an interesting quote that I believe nails the answer right on the head;

"In 'Mistakes Were Made(but not by me)', social psychologists Carol Tavris and Elliot Aronson explain that most people, when confronted with evidence that their beliefs or actions are harmful, immoral, or stupid, "do not change their point of view or course of action but justify it even more tenaciously." "

This would certainly explain why it's absolutely impossible to win any argument on this board. So with that said...is there even a point to debating or arguing when people will simply ignore the evidence and continue to justify their point that has no merit?

Your quote is relevant !

Bilateral debats are useless for the people arguing. It is interesting for bypassers, thought.

There is no way you convince someone by telling him he is wrong. The only way to change someone's mind is to make him look for a greater truth than what he believed in.

Step 1: Start an argument about people arguing.
Step 2: Divide by zero.

Assuming that the harmful, immoral or stupid beliefs and actions that furries are arguing about are certain exotic sexual kinks and preferences...
...would you honestly deny yourself thoughts and images of what sexually arouses you?

Then don't expect anyone else to either just because an argument is made against them.

Looking at porn isn't harmful.
"Immoral" and "stupid" are in the eye of the beholder, and there would never really be "evidence" of the fact when it comes to browsing pornography on the internet. Only opinions.

*reads thread title*

I do it for the fun of it. For me, it's not about winning debates, it's about having them. For this reason, I often play devil's advocate; it's not unusual for me to take a side I don't necessarily agree with in an argument I don't necessarily care about, just to see what answers the other side will give me. The topic doesn't have to be anything important, either -- anything I know enough about is fair game.

in general furries = illogical

thus any logical argument will be lost on the inevitable illogical furry who will make an illogical reply to the logical argument and thus cause the inevitable logical furry to make a logical attack against the illogical, ext ext.

/debate

but not really because that would be too logical of an end for such an issue.

ummm.... Most people argue, why do you think we have so many divisions and splinter groups? It takes a very rare person to actually change their mind from an argument, most just wind down in compromise.

Never visited the newsgroups, have you? Try the comp.* groups archives or any groups with "advocacy" in its name, or pick any non-binary group with high traffic. Read the comments/responses on a popular blog. Take a more detailed look at history. Read a scientific journal. Read the letter column in a newspaper or other periodical, especially those catering to a narrow interest or a fan-heavy subject (and not just Furry). Go peruse Slashdot or visit any site with a political/religious/computer platform/webcomic/whatever slant that allows people to  post replies. Then hit talk radio, TV, bars, schools and what have you.

The point being that people- not just furries - argue like it's a dietary requirement whenever the opportunity arises, and have been doing so for ever and anon. The only difference you might see is the degree of politeness, reasoning and thoughtfulness displayed and how loud and high pitched the shrieking gets.

Why state it like furries are the only ones?

A rare human can be logical for a while, but never all the time. And certainly never on the Internet. ;)

ahhh, the joys of grey areas...

I thought that was a great opening point, I've seen it from family and friends (the defence of the absurd/hurtful)  and it's an interesting observation. I think furries are just used to being ripped on generally, even by each other, so you naturally end up set in a more defensive mode. I think there is an element of intellectual superiority to it (the 'omg noob XD')  generation who know best, especially in a faceless environment.

Absolutely predictable.

Also, only use 3 periods for an ellipses, both before and after. Using too many just makes you seem silly.

Id Like to add that in real life people have arguments all the time as well, just that people tend to be more polite, thoughtful and compromise more.

Its the fact that were anonymous and potentially miles away from the person that were arguing with that emboldens people to be brash and argumentative.
