Art critique and advice; beginner artists are welcome to post here; includes an oekaki. (NO FLAMES)

Artists, read before posting!

Before you post your art to ask for critique, please read these tutorials. They explain the basic principles of drawing and figure drawing. Most posts where these basics are missing will never get a response, as people are quite frankly sick and bored of explaining over and over that you would have to pretty much learn how to draw first, before you could improve.

These were brought to my attention by Aeresque#Artist. Courtesy of Scribd: Drawing the Human head, Drawing Dynamic Hands, Dynamic Figure Drawing
And for those of you who want it a bit easier, we also have the whole thing as one neat rar with all three books in pdf form.

NEW! These were brought to my attention by MajorTom in #fchan. Courtesy of Andrew Loomis: Creative Illustration, Drawing the Head and Hands, Eye Of The Painter, Figure drawing for all it's worth, Fun with a Pencil, Successful Drawing, Drawing Dynamic Hands.

If you think you know a good basic tutorial that would fit in here, feel free to contact me under Xenofur in IRC and I will add the link.

A tiny bit of shading is all you really honestly need, like with this first one. I'll put up a bit of a modified picture to give you an idea.

Besides that, it looks good.

If you don't exactly know the whole shading thing, there's some pretty cool tutorials floating around in the internet. There's also the way you can teach yourself, set something near a light source and just practice the shading. There's a bunch of different types of shading, but I prefer the one that I used in this picture.

I've been drawing furry art since 2003, but, I haven't drawn much in the way of erotica or porn until recently.

I copied the pose from a picture I really like. I'm coloring it, slowly, because I work full-time. I'm looking for critique on the face though. She's got the bog standard O-face, it's boring me, and I was hoping for a suggestion or two. Any help?

No.1443 - Link Quick Reply Reply Report 1443

Nice drawing, color would make it pretty good.

If you're into it, I would suggest more fluids on the penis, such as semen or feminine fluids (I lol'd at myself for typing that)

I'd also say give the guy some more definition, he looks like some fat husky mutt. His belly button is also creeping me out.

As for the face, I would say have her arch her back and neck more, close her mouth and grit her teeth, and close her eyes. Add a bit of blush on her cheekbones.
Maybe some saliva? That would be purely on your preference.

All in all, great work so far, you could definitely become a favorite artist of mine with this quality of work!

If anyone has any critique on this drawing, anything that could be done to make it better. Please let me know :3

The picture is overall very well done, so good job!

Some good points:

  • Tufts of fur are in all the right places
  • Hair flows smoothly
  • Good shading on hair and upper body
  • Great facial expression
  • Nice wrinkling affect on panties

Some not-so-good points:

  • Hind paws (feet):
the toes seem short, and the paws are at much too steep of an angle.
the ankle joint also seems to be missing.

I'm new to arting, and I wanna know why you think! I know the muzzle is all sorts of wrong, and a ton of other stuff too. But, how do I fix it?

No.1441 - Link Quick Reply Reply Report 1441

It looks very... flat. You need to add more dimension somehow.
There are many ways of doing this...

  • First of all, shading!
    - More shading around the muzzle, plus a tapering effect towards the nostrils will make it look a lot better.
    - Tons of shading and darkening on the shirt/top. Wrinkles!
    - I can tell you tried to do shading, especially on the hair. The thing is that every portion of the body must have shading in a similar fashion. When you add shading, there has to be a certain point from which the light comes. I would recommend for you the upper-right. That means the upper-right portion of his ears, hair, face, eyes, muzzle, shirt, and arms must ALL be brighter than the center of the objects. The lower-left portion must be darker.
  • Secondly, a much more natural pose would be better.
    - While I'm not saying you should scrap this entire work, you need to pick a better pose. The character looks tense, and his facial expression doesn't match his body language. Drawing works really well with a reference picture. If you're drawing anthropomorphic animals then don't be afraid to look up pictures of human male models (not naked, just posing), or even other furry artist's works.

I had more to do here, but while testing out some lighting effects on the background I flattened all of the layers to do so, then I went to save it as a separate file. Instead of hitting "save as" I accidentally hit "save" like a dumbass and now its permanent T_T

No.1396 - Link Quick Reply Reply Report 1396

Too late now but uh, you can undo that when it happens. Seriously just undo, then resave the file.

Toying about with camera angles and perspective and stuff. The guy down on the floor has a few flaws which I just noticed, but it's the girl up on the sofa that I can't really seem to get. She's defying me. I'm trying to go for sort of "bored and disinterested in her boyfriend's rule-quoting, but am having a hard time pulling it off with the high angle.

Fiddled with a few things. Completely scrapped her pose all together.

Might be worth just getting someone to do the pose for you. Reference is always useful in pose situations.
