Art critique and advice; beginner artists are welcome to post here; includes an oekaki. (NO FLAMES)

Artists, read before posting!

Before you post your art to ask for critique, please read these tutorials. They explain the basic principles of drawing and figure drawing. Most posts where these basics are missing will never get a response, as people are quite frankly sick and bored of explaining over and over that you would have to pretty much learn how to draw first, before you could improve.

And for those of you who want it a bit easier, we also have the whole thing as one neat rar with all three books in pdf form.

NEW! These were brought to my attention by MajorTom in #fchan. Courtesy of Andrew Loomis: Creative Illustration, Drawing the Head and Hands, Eye Of The Painter, Figure drawing for all it's worth, Fun with a Pencil, Successful Drawing, Drawing Dynamic Hands.

If you think you know a good basic tutorial that would fit in here, feel free to contact me under Xenofur in IRC and I will add the link.

Any help with the face here?

Hello, folks!
So... I'm trying to make a fanart of a character from Magic: the gathering and, as you can probably see.... there is something wrong with this lion's face here, though I have absolutely no idea of what is the problem or how to fix it.
Any help?

No.1827 - Link Quick Reply Reply Report 1827

It's got a pretty uniform style that matches the rest of the drawing. Looks lionish- though it might just be a bit too small. If you disregard the mane, you can kind of see from his forehead and ears that his head isn't very big- I think the shoulders are actually a bit bigger than his skull. Maybe that's what you're seeing.

Hey guys.
Sry if i post this in wrong thread. English isn't my native language and I'm kinda newbie in here. I've drawn it all by myself. What do you think?

the body is alright, seems like you used a reference--which is good. the head is a little off putting though, doesn't look "screwed on" right, so to speak. The penis also seems a bit stiff (no pun intended); it's facing the viewer while the rest of the body is angled slightly away, and the head is looking even further away

Hi there. I'm looking to break into furry porn, and would appreciate some critique of my line art in general.

One thing that jumped out at me is that your lines vary in thickness depending on the detail. If there's more detail (like the feet) you use thin lines; if less (big curve of a belly) the lines are thick. Try challenging yourself in a couple of ways:

-Try using all uniform line thickness. This might make some areas look cluttered and other areas too sparse: how to solve that? Maybe find a way to imply details where you can't draw them all in. Maybe find a way to add details where it just looks too empty.

-Another challenge to try is using line-thickness to show light and shadow. Where the light hits the subject, using thinner lines makes it look brighter. Where there is shadow, thicker lines imply that.

Those are excellent suggestions. I think I can see what you're getting at. Thank you!

Critique on Composition

This is actually a sketch for an exhibition peice, rather than general furry art.

The theme is Fairy Tales so I wanted Puss in Boots and Big Bad Wolf as burlesque/drag queen performers ( Kinky Boots for Puss and Wolf dresses as a Granny in the stories).

Hows my perspective on the wolf? He's meant to be reaching out into the crowd, which will fill in the background.

No.1808 - Link Quick Reply Reply Report 1808

I think the perspective looks great! Very dynamic, it really looks like he's popping out of the plane. I'm not suuuure that the placement on the fox flows too well, though? What issa fox doing back there? Is he pole dancing or?

I've been working recently on a transformation story called Beastmen Rising. It involves a man or a woman transformed by an ancient pagan goddess into a sexualised and sexually liberated furry (fur, tails and paws and all that, but the face is more humanlike. Just a matter of preference; I am not into heavy furry stuff). He/she then gains the ability to transform others into beastmen and beastwomen through sexual contacts. What happens next is up to you, but obviously the following chapters are all about sex and transformations.

Google "Chyoa Beastmen rising"

What do you think? Can you provide feedback?

So the line art is still far from 'good', but I've been able to find resources for that, and I am making good progress towards better line art. Color on the other hand, I am having a lot of trouble figuring out, and I can't seem to find good resources. Can anyone recommend any good guides on digital coloring/painting? preferably for GIMP, but I assume most concepts should be transferable between software.

(comments/critiques on the lineart itself are also appreciated)
