Art critique and advice; beginner artists are welcome to post here; includes an oekaki. (NO FLAMES)

Artists, read before posting!

Before you post your art to ask for critique, please read these tutorials. They explain the basic principles of drawing and figure drawing. Most posts where these basics are missing will never get a response, as people are quite frankly sick and bored of explaining over and over that you would have to pretty much learn how to draw first, before you could improve.

These were brought to my attention by Aeresque#Artist. Courtesy of Scribd: Drawing the Human head, Drawing Dynamic Hands, Dynamic Figure Drawing
And for those of you who want it a bit easier, we also have the whole thing as one neat rar with all three books in pdf form.

NEW! These were brought to my attention by MajorTom in #fchan. Courtesy of Andrew Loomis: Creative Illustration, Drawing the Head and Hands, Eye Of The Painter, Figure drawing for all it's worth, Fun with a Pencil, Successful Drawing, Drawing Dynamic Hands.

If you think you know a good basic tutorial that would fit in here, feel free to contact me under Xenofur in IRC and I will add the link.

DId this a couple of days ago and was wondering how it looks. I would also like pointers for anthro faces. THanks.

For an aimless sketch of a beginner it's not too terrible. You lack direction though, as evident mostly in two things:

  • Composition fails. The subject is cut off by an edge and only barely centered.
  • It's difficult to tell the gender. Going by that chest it might be either a male with huge pecs, or a female with oddly rectangular and saggy breasts.

As for faces: Do not ask "How do i build a skyscraper?" Begin smaller, build a hut first, then work your way up. In this case: Learn how to do human faces, then draw animal heads. Then work out for yourself how to combine those. This process will require hundreds of sketches for you to work out.

I figured as much. Thank you for the advice.

Basics, basics, basics. Art elements and principles, how they apply to an image, then anatomy and proportion.

At this very moment, I would not worry so much with ideas of composition, although you should keep them in mind to study later, maybe look up the basics of it while learning the elements and principles.

Made a halfway decent (although not quite as bookish as I'd prefer) post on basics and getting used to a media recently: >>466

In your case, you're using... what, oC? The bits about learning to make smooth strokes are still important, but for color in such a program you want to lay down a complete base color first so that the white isn't showing through... but color should not be what you worry about right now anyway.

Anthro faces? Learn to draw animal faces, combine them with the knowledge you should have of drawing human faces. There is no 'right' way to do it, so you should experiment with variations to see what you like. Someone, somewhere, will always dislike it, whether it is 'too human' or 'too animal' or 'too cartoony' or whatever.
