Reading through the "what got you into furries" thread makes me think that there's something special about this whole funny animal nonsense. There's something about it that is strangely compelling.

Is it a humanity thing? Several cultures throughout time have either anthropomorphic art or religious imagery, and only recently does anthropomorphism seem to have a less spiritual tone to it.

Or is there some sort of quirk in a certain percentage of the population that makes us think animal people are nifty? Can it really be just a bunch of similarly crazy people?

A desire to return to nature? A need to remember our animal heritage? Some crazy perverts who want to fuck their pets? What's the deal fchan - why do you think furry is?

It's a fantasy, period.
A fan base, like the ones based on anime TV shows and movies.
Or Star Trek.
Star Wars.
Buffy The Vampire Slayer.
Whatever.

Reality is something we deal with every damn day.
Politics.
Religion.
Crime.
Work.
Family.

A fan base is our "get away from it all."

And besides, Playboy centerfolds are just as real as Zig Zag is. :-)

Some people dream of exploring space, some people dream of being wizards, some people dream about being a ninja, and some people dream about being a furry.  Furries might be a lesser-known fandom when compared to things like Star Wars, or video games... but people here are really no different than those who imagine themselves as a Jedi.  It's just our way of escaping reality for a while.

I never thought of being a furry...I'd like to have one as a pet, or as a friend, rather than being one...

I don't think i want to be a furry per se, I just want to be anyone but myself, if that makes sense. So if I dream of becoming  Kevin Smith or Fred Perry or Doug Winger or maybe even someone a little more fictional, that beats the hell out of being myself and living my life.

There is definitely something special about furry characters. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that we have been exposed to anthropomorphic cartoon characters during our most formative childhood years. Anthropomorphic characters are imprinted into our brains in a fundamental way.

Hmm... I guess expecting a more scientific/rigorous response from /dis/ wasn't the brightest.

Yes, it is a fantasy. But it's also a recurring fantasy from the earliest ages of humanity. My question is, "Is that a coincidence or is there something going on here? If there is, what is it?"

>>3
Same thing.

>>6
That could explain why we're furries, but not why the people who thought up the ancient egyptian religion or countless other people through history were.

>>7
I'm not going to touch this one.

Sincerely,
>>1

>>8 Expecting a better reply wasn't foolish, this topic was just buried under a different angle of the concept, probably because of the way you worded it originally.

What was foolish was the way you opened the topic and the wording.  If you want a real answer, go read (or start another) of those "what is furry" topics.

Though "Why do you think furry is?" is a pretty badly worded question, I don't see how the wording is foolish. My original question was, worded better, "Why do you think humanity has a history of portraying anthropomorphic creatures?" "Why do you think furry is?" also captures this question.

The subject line was merely to attract attention. No one should be posting based on the subject of a topic alone.

The "What is furry?" topics are not what I'm asking. For the purposes of this discussion, use the broadest definition of furry - anthropomorphic animals. If they talk, walk, or think, that counts here.

To get back on topic, I propose a theory: anthropomorphism is merely humaity's attempt to understand processes in terms of human behavior, psychology, and emotion. We don't know why animals do what they do, so we think in terms of why we do what we do and anthropomorphize the animals to make them fit this process. Thoughts?

Sincerely,

>>1 >>8 >>10 >>11 and whatever else you posted

If that is what you wanted, you should've worded it specifically like that.  Try starting a new topic with an intelligent beginning post as I suggested before and you're likely to get a greater response.

Generally those smart enough to give useful replies would read what you posted up at >>1 and the topic and ignore you for being a fool, especially due to the end there, while those who take interest in topics named like this read on and find it's over their heads.

I don't know why I'm bothering to reply to this again myself other than politeness and trying to encourage a higher standard on the boards.
