site is up again www.hetfurs.com

anyway , we are still lacking of users and artists, but why?

most of the new furry art is commisioned nowadays , and commissions are mostly m/m themed, no , i am not saying that it's bad, but why people rarely commision f/m? Lack of money? that must be the reason ,but im sure theere are some... no not rich, but affordable straight furry fans.Help starving artists and help HF fans at same time!

Inform your pals,Ask artist you know to join us.We may be rare but we need some fun too.

ps.I will write here again when we will be ready for a contest , our mascot needs a partner ;)
pps.my english might be bad.sowwy.

Actually I think you don't have so much artist becouse of scattering of artists. There are meny art communities already and most people don't want to sign for every one. Also your community do not shows enything new, and exciting, Your site do not use eny of the new fancy buzzwords like AJAX or WEB 2.0, plain phpBB and coppermine gallery do not sell that good. Sadly this is how it works.
I wish you good luck, becouse you want to create high quality pictures galery, and this is something that is actually missing in most of communities. Mayby when I decide to post my works somewhere ill sign up there.

If you want to headhunt for straight artists, perhaps a post at Playmouse will net you better results?

Good luck with your great site!

I don't see what's so special about hetfurs. It's a straight furry art gallery, but so is PlayMouse, and PlayMouse is a whole lot bigger. Unless hetfurs offers something PlayMouse doesn't, I'll keep going to PlayMouse.

Also, who says commissions are mostly m/m? It depends on what the artist is known for. The artists who are known for quality straight art do plenty of commissions of female characters.

You could try to find some way to set up the site so that it's similar to DeviantArt or that yaoi gallery place (which I heard is also similar to DA). Also try advertising the site where straight furry art actually exists (PlayMouse), or ask artists who draw only or mostly straight art and don't have much places to post up their works, clean or adult.

As a hetfur "user" (someone who occasionally browses the gallery there), I find the Coppermine gallery extremely inefficient to work with. There's no way to track specific artists without bookmarking directly to their "Last Additions" page, there doesn't seem to be any journaling, and the page layout just seems very uninviting and hard to navigate. It looks more like an online personal archive that others can peruse, and we already have one of those: VCL. And between the two, I find VCL's layout and interface easier to navigate with, and less obtrusive. Plus, VCL is less restrictive of content, which is a nice thing for people with multiple tastes, and artists that don't want to be locked down.

That said, I personally even prefer FA over VCL because I can maintain watch lists, read artists' journals to know what's going on with them, and other such things, pretty cleanly (if slowly). As well, FurPlz and ArtPlz are on their way up, and could possibly, very easilly, overtake FA in functionality and ease-of-use, as long as they don't mess up.

I don't think such a highly-specific target such as what hetfurs targets, along with the way it does it, has much room to work. Straight furs could just filter out the gay stuff from existing galleries, and basically get the same content much easier. Plus, given that most furs are gay or bi, they actually wouldn't mind some gay stuff next to the straight, hence they wouldn't even need to filter. It also makes it easier on the artist because then they wouldn't be locked into only being able to do straight art for the site, though they could still easilly choose to if they so wished.

Y!Gallery works because, even though it's gay only, it has much better software, and doesn't target just furs (though they've found their place there). But even still, I occasionally see people complaining that they can't really do anything with their non-gay art there.

So, that's my critique of why things aren't all that great. It's a nice concept, but it's a rather specific target with very poor execution. Maybe if you had better software for the gallery you'd attract more people, but as it is.. it's just not nice for people to work with.
