Anyway, the day comes, I get to the table, and in a long standing tradition, we all start in a tavern. I’m beckoned over to a table in a corner, and who should I see, but... some sort of ultra powerful draconian type dude with shape shifting powers, telekinesis, telepathy, and the ability to convert the elements around him into weapons and armor for any situation. Next came the daughter of Anubis and Freya, who was raised as a Valkyrie, and was taught the assassin arts as well as necromancy by her father (WTF!?). There was some sort of vampire lord/werewolf in there, and a time traveler with a “phazzin blade” (lightsaber), and a prodigal swordsman who combined the masamune of heaven, hell, and earth into a single blade known as the tetra-masamune...

So yeah... six and a half hours of watching other people do the dragon ball Z thing... but I played nice. I did my part... mostly as a scout (when the psychic guy was too busy), but also as the diplomat. Apparently my mere hawkman was more approachable than the werewolf with the aura of death. They ended up making me the leader, the demigoddess was seducing me, and the super swordsman (a kitsune) kicked my ass a dozen times in his attempts to train me eastern style, but in the end, I think it all went pretty well.

Because I had an ally. You see, the GM was one of those guys who doesn’t like to say “no” to his players, but he also liked it when you paid attention to the story he was trying to tell. So while the others were flexing their fantasy muscles so they could bask in their own power, I was conversing with the NPCs, paying attention to clues, and otherwise involving my character with the world that was being painted. As a result, I had a tendency to be, uh, lucky.

Anyhow, I’m finishing this campaign this weekend, and the dude who’s place I took will be joining us (A 2400 foot tall fucking macro!), but my birdman with his pointed stick is apparently welcome any time. Despite the cheese, I think I’ll keep on for a while. It’d be nice if they toned it down a bit though.

Jesus, why do people need to have such powerful characters anyway?

As one of my D&D buddies says, "This ain't 'Nam!  We have *rules* here!"  If you're roleplaying in a system where numbers are important -- that encompasses pretty much any combat-heavy game -- it's also important that they be carefully balanced so that you *can't* have broken characters.  (and for what it's worth, I do consider the core D&D rules to be pretty well balanced, although once you start introducing supplementary materials you have to be careful...)
