In the news: 23 Japanese media companies have banded together to threaten YouTube over hosting copyrighted Japanese videos (presumably including anime). In response (read: scared of a lawsuit), YouTube removed 30,000 copyrighted files.

YouTube has been blazenly hosting copyright material. How long can they keep this up? I'm just waiting for the shit to hit the fan. Discuss.

youtube is as legal as fchan. they didn't delete anything because they were scared, they deleted it because they received requests to take it doen.

As Xenofur said...

Besides, the content wasn't really legal in the first place, but as YouTube is a huge place, content upload can't really be moderated as succesfully as FChan.

IANAL, but as I understand, Fchan does *far* more than is legally necessary.

It's not as if the same Japanese videos and such aren't available from countless other sources - and in FAR HIGHER QUALITY. Why on earth would anyone want to watch those choppy low-quality versions, anyway? I guess it must be the same people who like watching movies on their PSP, and so on. *snort*

>>10 Because those High quality sources tend to be either TORRENTS, other Peer 2 Peer sources or not-so Legal sites.

Google is VERY much public and legit, so the material there has to follow suit.

After all, a small 100-member warez forum isn't really subject to as much international scrutiny as a "million views daily" page such as Google's YouTube, now is it?

>>11 Only thing worth watching thru YouTube is material that is not available elsewhere, in better quality. Mostly original material, posted by the users - that's what the site was created for in the first place. I cannot figure out why it'd bother anyone that those copyrighted videos were removed - let alone bother them enough to complain about it.

There are even some people who think that since YouTube is supposed to be legit site, that watching such videos there is actually less illegal than using some other source to get them - such as torrents. Bloody ridiculous. I'd say - If you're going to break the law, then at least do yourself a favor and view the material in high quality instead of the pixelated eyecancer quality that is YouTube.

Many artist have recenlty complained about Youtube showing all their hard earned copyrighted material now that Youtube is now owned by Google. Why now? Many companies now threathen Google with lawsuits cause it is econmically viable to go after acompany with deep pockets.

>>13 Seems rather likely. Of course, there are bound to be some legit cases where the artist didn't actually even know of YouTube, and only found out about it from the major headlines after Google bought the site. ...but most of them are after quick cash settlement, I bet. :P
