Ads on my FChan?!

Wow, is it me or has FChan become a big whore? I understand having furry artists post ads on the site, that doesn't bother me, but when i see ads to "get paid to post in your blog" which is obviously a scam, that kind of pisses me off. I realize that FChan probably needs funding, but these ads are getting on my nerves.

We've been over this before. Please check the last twenty or so threads before making a new one, thanks.

Also, >>2 is right. We didn't choose to put them up, the host did.

Here's an idea...if you don't like them...IGNORE THEM. They take a whopping 10 seconds or less out of your day, oh boo hoo. This site is giving you free content that you probably enjoy and if a few seconds of your time is too much to ask please leave. I'm getting tired of people acting like every damn thing in the world should be free and every webhost should pay expensive monthly costs out of their own pocket for the sake of unappreciative users like yourself.

You are browsing a free site, an obviously fairly popular one. Aside from charging to view the site there is only a few options.
1. Pay the bill out of their own pocket and keep the site ad free.
2. Display ads on the site to get revenue to pay for the site(usually still isn't enough and so something STILL has to be paid out of pocket)
3. Display more obtrusive ads that display maybe once a day but pay enough that bandwidth costs are more manageable.

When you are on a subscription based site you pay for...then you can bitch about ads. Until then, shut up and use google to find ad blocking programs or add-ons if you truly don't want to support the site.

Here's a question.

The ads that I get are the 'Fchan is brought to you by...' full-page ads, with the 'continue on' link in the top-right corner. I do not mind these ads appearing, however after clicking on the continue link, my pageup/pagedown, and arrowup/arrowdown scrolling is broken. I need to reload the page to be able to use the keyboard to scroll.

This is especially annoying because I use a laptop to browse FChan.

Is there a fix for this?

Wow...apparently people can't read, huh? I believe the complaint was that the ads are advertising obvious scams. Perhaps you people should try not being quite so, I dunno...pissy all the time? Just a suggestion. A suggestion of "Hey, you could simply get an ad-blocker" instead of "Hey, you fucking idiot, you should die you're so stupid. Get an ad-blocker!" Yeah...sounds a little better, yes?

Well if you don't like it leave, its not up to xeno AT ALL and there is nothing he can do about it. Go complain at the host or GIVE HIM MONEY so they well go away. A site like this costs money, lots of money and if whoring yourself out to a few ads makes it easier to pay for keeping a porn site up than so be it.

Either way shut up.

Aisha at 16 Mar 2007: 23:43

Well the adds never botherd me until every other word started becoming an add.

Also Fchan should find a new host and put up it's own adds (maybe furry relevant ones) and perhaps even encourage others not to use this host.

It seems the curent host sees Fchan (being a very popular site) as a new oportunity to scam some money.

Okay. Good idea. A new host... How about you pay for it?

[grammar_nazi]And it's 'ad' if you're looking to shorten 'advertisement'.[/grammar_nazi]

15Report
Aisha at 17 Mar 2007: 15:16

Hmm and you know maybe Fchan could host fund raisers for a new host? Like many other places. I'm not talking about begging for money or anything either.

also once Fchan got onto a new host then new adds (selectively and not all over the damn site and hidded in every word) could be put up.

You do relize the current host is just thinking it can get a quick buck off of what they see as a pathetic fandom made up of mostly looser loney virgins?

Just look at the type of adds they are running, "No girlfirend?"
"Affair watch"

It's all dating services, scams for free porn and other stuff aimed at people they see as suckers. They obviously ee the popularity of the site, by all the hits they get, and they also must have pretty stereotypical views of what furs are.

I just don't tthink we deserve to be exploited by people that obviously think pretty low of us.

Eh...you are jumping to a lot of bad assumptions there based on little to no evidence. Those types of ads just so happen to be the most common on pornographic sites. The only reason 4chan doesn't have those type of ads is because the site owner has some strong feelings about "ads should be relevant to 4channers interests". For most porn sites it is very common to see the ads you describe. Chances are he didn't even pick the ads, those are just the ones who decided to advertise here.

Your accusations are unfounded and the revenue off the ads being shown is probably minimal at best.

Sorry, I just have to say I love the opening line to the post, because "Has FChan become a big whore?" translates out roughly to "Has FChan compromised its sexual morals?" L to the O to the L indeed.

Well seeing as the host is puting up the adds. it's the host we should be mad at. and also why I think that Fchan needs a new host.

U\you also mentioned that 4chan has no adds because the owner thinks adds should be relevent to it's users. I think the the adds on Fchan should be relevent to it's users.

Aisha, I know in your own way you're trying to do what you think is the right thing.  But all this bickering isn't really going to get us anywhere.

If you want the ads to go away, there's a very simple solution.  Just spend the $200-ish fee per month to keep fchan going.

And if you want more furry appropriate ads, find some furry site willing to spend $200-ish a month to advertise on fchan.

Otherwise, you kind of have to deal with it.  I know modern society would have you believe otherwise, but nobody can ever have everything their way all the time.

On a side note, nobody picks and chooses the ads, their grabbed out of a computer database based on keywords.  Fchan is a furry porn site.  Since adbrite.com probably doesn't have any furry ads in its database, there are going to be porn ads.

I hope that clears everything up! ^^

Thanks for the explanation, you're pretty much right on all points. To make it a bit more understandable:

This site is hosted on a server that is owned by a nice guy who calles himself Tenchi. About two years or so he offered to host fchan, for free, since he already has his own ISP company. Since then it has grown from a small time site that could run together with a bunch of others on the same server to a huge thing that gobbles up 5 Terabytes of bandwidth per month and was able to totally cripple a dual opteron processor when we were still running Apache. Additionally there is a pretty strong and growing userbase: http://di-tron.org/users.gif

>>18
You need to understand that he is currently providing services and hardware in the worth of roughly 200$ to us, for free. These ads are merely an attempt of his to take the edge off of this, not to profit in any way.

Lastly, if you are really bothered by them, you are always free to block the adbrite servers and never see another of their ads again. However, i think it is reasonable to expect that people who are bothered y the ads figure these things out on their own.

Regrading the relevance, that's easy for 4chan, anime is a HUGE field with a lot of industry behind it. Furry is nothing more than a fly buzzing arond in comparison, a fly that isn't going to make anyone reasonale money anytime soon as well.

4chan has no ad's ? who are u kidding ? it has the exact same ads as Fchan because its useing the same sponsor. but it also has ads from 3 other sponsors and the ones that they sell direct, it in fact has MORE ad’s then Fchan. and everyopne seems to forget Fchan was hosted FOR 2 YEARS FOR FREE, I fall onto hard time an all of a sudden "the host is trying to make a quick buck on the furry fandom" yea, thanks. I feel really appreciated. If it’s so easy, you host it, a server + 20mbit is cheap, no prob. Really.

I am curious about the configuration that runs fchan. What kind of hardware/software do you use? I see you (appear to) use lighttpd on Gentoo, but anything special?

That graph is kinda funny.  It's fairly obvious when the DNS server goes down :)

Tenchi, you are appreciated, trust me your are. Just ignore the few blind sided self indulged furries who moan and cry about everything that isn't perfect. this site your hosting for us wouldn't have lasted very long at all on "another host" {Most of all with this place costing over $2500 a year}, becuase i've seen it time and time again. You think most these people here would donate a dime for such high costs? No way. This place would eventually crumble from money problems

You do what you want with the ads, I know exactly how you feel stunting the price of such a high costing place, many of us are thankful, just ignore the other droves of bitchers.

Have to jump in here... Tenchi, don't think you aren't appreciated! Even the no-account jackoffs who are bitching about the fact there are ads on the site are directly showing how much what you do is appreciated since, hey, they have to be using the site to see the ads! If they didn't like the site enough to be going to it to get their rocks off, they wouldn't be able to throw their bitch fit in the first place. And compared to how many people use the site, the complaints are tiny. Like with most things on the Internet, you get a few loud mouths making a big stink and it seems like a huge thing when it isn't. Believe me, your hosting is highly appreciated!

If you want to prove it, just announce a "vote by hits" day where people are asked to show their disapproval of ads on FChan by not hitting the site at all for a period of 24 hours. Afterwards, you can look at the site stats for that day and see just how much of the user base we're talking here. I bet you wouldn't even see a noteworthy dip in usage.

I think Aisha totally misunderstood what I was saying about 4chan's ads. Anyway, to say what everyone else is...your hosting is appreciated a lot and I totally agree with your decision to put ads here. Donations wouldn't work worth a damn, 4chan has a much bigger user base and the site had to die multiple times just to make people start donating.

Thanks a lot for the hosting of this site and ignore the people who bitch and expect everything the way they want it without nary an understanding of the economics behind webhosting.

Hell, next pay, expect 100 bucks from me as thanks! (would be this paycheck but nooo, my bike had to blow a piston /grumble) I'm assuming the "Support Fchan today!" is where I have to go to send it to you?

To the guy nice enough to host this mess for us, my thanks as well.

At least these ads are unintrusive and keep a great site up. If they really annoy you, yeah , get an ad-blocker. Anyway, it doesn't bother me.

I run ads on websites I host, but they tend to fit witht he page, I don't like or apreciate full-page disasters and text ads are annoying, so I've stuck with google ones, but they pay craply. As long as you find an advertiser that doesn't do popups and annoying javascript "in-your-face" crap, then go for it. I personally just feel they detract from the pretty things I'm looking at so my router allows me to block by host/keyword, here's my current list for the lazy:
