How it began

First Bridget made me gay then Renamon made me furry.

Okay maybe not. Although I've always loved nature and animals and all that bullshit and thought the crocodile dudes in Donkey Kong Country were awesome when I was younger, I didn't realize that I was turning into a full-fledged furry until it was too late. Drawing lots of werewolves and salamander people probably would've clued me in if I didn't have a girlfriend distracting me all the time. I had even started hanging out with some furries at the university who I met through gaming club. Through their influence I guess one day I just kinda snapped and crackled and popped and suddenly became an furry!

tl;dr guys wut do I do I'm a furry now!? Optionally, how did you become an furry!?

What do you do? You continue living your life normally while you enjoy your newfound hobby. Or whatever you want to call it. Scene, maybe? Whatever you young people call it these days.

Furry is just a label based upon something you like. Not too different from being a goth and dressing in Neo-Victorian garb from Hot Topic. Only, you can dress up in a fursuit, or wear funny ears, and run around really shiny and slippery hotel floors, sliding this way and that. It provides much amusement for a lot of people, believe me.

What do you do?

A) Quit treating it like some kind of life-changing moment. You're the one who can choose to label yourself as furry or not, it's entirely up to you.
B) Enjoy it.

Additionally, I became furry primarily because of anthropomorphic cartoons as a kid, but never really grew out of it. Then I was happy there was a fandom for this kind of thing with a less kiddy feel to it.

Winnars, both of you. Remember kids, you only really fail when you start treating your hobby as your lifestyle, more with furry.

Just sit around looking at badly drawn porn all day.

What else is there to life? (Furry or not?)

A lot...

Even if you don't dress up in a costume, furry can still take over your life if you spend too much time fapping to porn instead of dating girls IRL, too much time socializing online instead of meeting people face-to-face, too much time travelling to fantasy worlds instead of seeing the real world. There's too much out there in the real world to waste our lives staring at the burning phosphers of a computer monitor!

Bridget made you gay?  You can't be MADE to be gay.  Same with furry.  You re or you aren't.  Sometimes you just don't know it yet.

Somewhere out there you know there's someone who attributes their furry status to the Care Bears.

And that scares me.

I hope people aren't treating "furry" with the same weight as "gay". Furry is not an innate sexual orientation. It's a quirk/fetish if you are so inclined.
>>9 For the life of me, I still can't fathom why so many people find Sonic the Hedgehog characters so sexy. This hasn't happened nearly as much with any other cartoon characters that weren't designed to be sexy to begin with.

I'm not treating furry with the same weight as gay.  Gay is rooted deeper, possibly as deep as your genetic code (though that's constantly being debated).  Furry doesn't go as deep, but just like foot fetishes, you can be predisposed to it (not likely genetically).  The way your brain is wired doesn't necessarily make you furry, but it makes you more receptive to the idea, and when you see anthropomorphic art, it is more likely to grab a hold of your mind than another person not so predisposed to "different" things.  (Actually, I hear tell that foot fetishes go deeper than any furry fetish - something about crossed wiring in the brain making the brain associate the foot with sex, I think I heard).  IMO sexuality has "layers" - homosexuality, heterosexuality and bisexuality are on the deepest layer, and then after that, it's up for debate.  But furry can definitely qualify as part of one's sexuality, and as part of one's identity (not ALL of your identity, but it forms a part - just like people who like to build model airplanes, that forms a part of their identity as well.  PART is the operative word here).  There might be some furries who aren't into the sexual facet of the furry fandom at all, but I don't think I've met any such people yet, at least none who would actually call themselves furries.

And I really resent you messing with my name like that, douchenozzle.

Another thing - when I said "you are or you aren't" in regards to being a furry, I made a statement that was too black and white.  I will admit that.  But IMO anyone whose brain is wired in a way that would make them receptive to furry-ness is a furry in potentia (sp?), and thusly a furry (though they may not have realized it yet).  So while my original statement was overly black-and-white, it still holds some water, because if you have the definite mental potential to be furry, you technically ARE furry - just a paler shade, perhaps - and if you do NOT have that mental potential, you AREN'T, and will likely never be possessed of what some might call a "true" furry mindset, even if they display appreciation for anthro artwork.

I meant nothing more by it than a little joke. Unless I'm mistaken you didn't invent the name, you only adopted it.  It reminded me of the phrase, "Make me a liar."

>>13  Disagree.  Someone can have xenophilic appreciation for anthropomorphizing other things (inanimate objects for example) but not care much for when it's done to animals.  Such a person is most likely "wired in a way that would make them receptive to furry-ness," but they're a long way from being any sort of "furry" in any sense (that I'm aware of) of the word. The key to "furry" is that animals (fictional or non) are involved.  Otherwise the person is just a xenophile, really.

Oh. I'm sorry, then.  I'm quick to fly off the handle.  The name is from a humorous NPC from The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind (and to a lesser extent, TES4: Oblivion... though Beth turned him into a PR whore in Oblivion >.< ).  He happens to be a Khajiit, as well.  I like Khajiit.  Especially Ahnassi. (another character from Morrowind)

>>15
Xenophile... that's a term I hadn't ever heard used before in that context.  I think I've heard of people who enjoy anthropomorphizing automobiles, so I guess I see your point.  Perhaps the "wiring" that makes them receptive is more basic, and is influenced by that person's tendency to gravitate towards animals, or whatever.  I think I have a great deal of empathy with animals, and generally value their company over human company, barring a few exceptions.  (Animals are also extraordinarily empathic as well.)

>>12 Furry doesn't go as deep, but just like foot fetishes, you can be predisposed to it (not likely genetically).

We are predisposed to furry because we were exposed to anthropomorphic cartoon characters during a young age when our brains are very receptive and learning such fundamental tasks as facial recognition. As a result, our brains are wired to recognize and empathize with cartoon faces on a subconscious level. A psychologist did a study with a South American tribe what was not exposed to cartoons as children, and when shown drawings, did not even recognize that the drawings were of animals. However, an American child would instantly recognize the animals in the drawings.

Most of the Yerf community, and a large portion of the furry artists who are on DA.

Here's how it began with me...

I was 14, and I was at home being bored. I got up and randomly started looking through the collection of Disney video tapes on a shelf and then I came across the videotape of Robin Hood and I stopped. I pulled the cassette out and looked at the cover. I thought to myself "Hmm.....fox. How is it I've never noticed this before? ...foxes are pretty hot." I then had a huge thing for foxes for two years. All I could think about was foxes.

I was 15 now. I joined a forum about foxes. There were a couple people there who were "furries", a thing I've never heard of before. I Wikipedia'd it, and thought it was stupid. "Nah, I'm no furry", I thought, "furries like anthropomorphic foxes, and they think that they have animal souls according to this article.".

Then I turned 16. I was at my computer reading the Furry article. I thought "Well...I might be a furry. I like anthros a little I guess...aw heck, sure. I suppose I'll consider myself a fur now. I wonder if being a fur will change me...". The Wikipedia article stated VCL. I went on VCL and started searching for furry art. At first, it was strictly non-mophic art. Then I started liking anthros so I searched for anthro art (but no gay art! Gay was discusting!). Then, I started liking gay art. I *really* started liking it.

At seventeen, I was now a full gay fur, and my evolution from normal to gay fur was complete.

Now nineteen, there is one thing I'm pretty sure of, and that's that I was going to be a fur all along. I think it's a genetic preference of the brain, like the way homosexuality is.
