Eh...the trailer didn't impress me at all. Yeah, one guy made the whole thing, that's great and all but he is a professional. It might be better than the trailer looks but I didn't see anything that made me go "wow" especially after seeing a few other small team created CGI films that don't charge money and look way better.

Furries will love this movie JUST because it's furry but overall it's a pretty terrible piece of animation. While impressive because the fact one guy did almost everything there is MANY glaring flaws.

The animation is obviously limited due to the fact there is no motion capture(not that I could see anyway) and because there is one guy working on it. So basically all the fights scenes are boring. In addition this guy seems to lack a good sense of what well done fight choreography is. Though the facial animations look quite nice and I will give him props on that.

The voice acting....and really all the sounds were muddled, I doubt it was because of the encode, they were just recorded poorly. So that's yet another problem. The sounds were limited and of course this also hurt the battle related scenes and reminded me of a flash movie in terms of quality. There was too much silence and not enough sound effect recording done.

The story itself...well it doesn't really try to implement any kind of animal related culture into anything. It's pretty much just a traditional psuedo-japanese story that could have been done just as well if not better with human characters. I find this disappointing because whats the damn point of using anthromorphic characters if they all just live with each other in harmony as if there is no social structure based on obviously stronger species?

All in all...I didn't really enjoy watching this movie and i'm glad I grabbed a torrent of it first to realize this. Hopefully as this guy continues this project he will start doing a little bit better with sound recording and fight choreography then this MAY be worth buying.

To give a few examples of better done pieces of animation with small or one man teams;
Voices of a Distant Star
Elephants Dream
Haloid(Kaze's creator could learn a thing or two about fight choreography from Monty Oum)
Rockfish

What can I say? I could keep listing and listing both commercial and free movies done by small or one man teams that surpass Kaze Ghost Warrior in just about every single aspect.(especially sound and choreography) I could even recommend a few flash animations that have better overall design. Hell, most student film animation projects look and sound better.

I'm not trying to crap all over the guy's parade but I find it pretty laughable how many people say this movie is great or deserves 5/5 when it clearly has flaws up the wazoo. Pretty much the only positives are;
-It's furry
-It has good facial animations
-It has fairly decent models and environments(if not a bit sparse)

Everything else is a negative. I hope to save someone money by posting this.

Pixar does not use motion capture. Some animators will argue that motion capture does not create the best animation, animators do!

But, like you, I also did not enjoy watching Kaze.

I would contest that the 2D character art in Voices of a Distant Star is somewhat amateurish, and the character animation is very limited. Even so, I love this film! Shinkai tells a great story, very effectively, through limited animation.

I think the character animation in Kaze runs circles around that in Voices. But Kaze is far less effective at putting that animation to good use. It struggles to establish its characters and tell its story. The difference is, Albee is an animator, but Shinkai is a director.

"A break-through masterpiece of animation! Kaze, Ghost Warrior proves that the face of filmmaking has been changed forever! A powerful Animé storyline with the fluidity of a Disney Classic and the visual richness of Minority Report, all done by one man, on two computers in six months! Wow! You have got to see this film!" - Jeremy Smith, "General Protection Fault"

I lol'd so hard hard at this review. Apparently all it takes is 6 months, one guy, two computers and a $5000 budget(living expenses) to have disney quality animation, visual richness on level with a multi-million dollar blockbuster and change the face of filmmaking forever.

I actually have this movie... I dont know where i found it.. but I have it saved on my MP3 player and can upload it on my computer any time... lol I would give it out.. but it IS a movie that is sold... It is a good and Beautifully animated Movie.. but the sound FX could have been better.... and the voice acting Also the sory is a little boring for my tastes..... but what do you expect from someone who made the movie BY himself, with only 3 computers. and did ALL the sound FX by himself and the voices. I forgot how long it took for him to make it... i wanna say 3 months XD I doubt it.. but.. Over all it is a good movie and there is even a slight hint rthat Kaze Might be gay in it lol but I love it either way just because its a furry movie lol.. only 30 mins long but good nonethe less!

>>13 This post sums up why so many furries have taken Kaze as the coming of god. No, it's not a good movie. It's fantrash with some bright spots with weeaboo slime covering everything. I've seen far better projects them the mindless furry pandering that Kaze is.

I hope he's not holding out waiting for Dreamworks or Pixar or Digipen to hire him.

Did you read any of the above posts? It's 23 minutes, took SIX months to make on TWO computers with a $5000 budget(living expenses). Also, if you read the above posts you can see a small sample of movies that were made by one person or small teams(less than 5 people) that are absolutely astounding in comparison to Kaze. Just because one person made it doesn't mean all the flaws should be ignored.

>>14
Yep, like said earlier...furries will love it just because it's furry. He seems like a nice guy and says some stuff in his interview that makes me want to like him but the film simply isn't good.

Speaking as an animator, rotoscoping doesn't create the best animation. It's a shortcut to cover the fact that the animator(s) can't animate very well. That doesn't mean that rotoscoping can't work in animation if that's the look you're going for.

Example: The old Hobbit cartoon. It was entirely rotoscoped and the characters were stupidly detailed. But, because it was rotoscoped (cheaply rotoscoped at that) the characters still felt stiff. Same with Final Fantasy: Spirits within, those characters were rotoscoped and they looked stiff.

However, even major studios can fumble around rotoscoping. Disney rotoscoped Snow White, but they did the dwarves in a more traditional cartoony fashion. While Snow was rotoscoped beautifully, it looked rather out of place with the cartooniness of the dwarves

Add a sex scene and animation quality will no longer matter.

>>16 Yeah, true.  I just really like how it looks in the old animated features and feature shorts of our grandparents' day.  Max Fleisher's Superman cartoons are still stunning.

"Disney rotoscoped Snow White, but they did the dwarves in a more traditional cartoony fashion. While Snow was rotoscoped beautifully, it looked rather out of place with the cartooniness of the dwarves"

I think the effect they were going for there was to make Snow White stand out.  And thus began the Disney tradition of putting a hottie in every significant animated feature that didn't star animals. (Uncle Walt probably just did it for the casting couch)

"It's 23 minutes, took SIX months to make on TWO computers with a $5000 budget(living expenses)."

Is this including pre and post production? If so, no wonder people think it's crap. If that's true, he must have worked like a demon!

From personal experience and what I've heard in college, it's certainly doable, but why would anyone want to rush it so badly?

http://www.animwatch.com/Feature09-Kaze.php

Read the interview. It sounds like he adequately prepared himself...he just isn't a good director, choreographer or sound effects guy. After finishing he should have at least watched it once and realized he needed to tweak some of the fight animations and add some better sound. It still wouldn't have been the best piece of animation ever but at least it could have been a LITTLE better.

I think the poor sound killed it more than anything else. Good music and sound effects can easily make up for average or even sub-par animation by building excitement and a feeling of tension. Sound isn't as easy as people think though...even hollywood live action movies re-record nearly EVERY sound to give it more oomph. Animation sound design people have an even more difficult job because if you've ever watched a making of you see they use some really creative props to make all the sounds.
