Furry Tattoos

Hi guys.

As fellow furries, I'd like your opinion. For a long time I've been roleplaying as a catwoman (I'm female irl, don't worry! ^-^) and I've really established myself as her. Recently, I've discovered Katzen, a woman who has tattooed herself all over with stripes, had her ears pointed and wears whiskers in her lip piercings. I wouldn't go that far, but what do you think of getting just a couple of stripes on my upper arm? Maybe three or so, like a catscratch? My character is a white catgirl with black tiger-like stripes, and I really like the idea, but I've often been told my ideas were rather... um... odd.

Opinions?

That sounds kinda cool, not unlike tribal pattern tattoos. Well-designed and planned tattoos can show the wearer's taste and imagination with some subtlety rather than gaudiness. I'm never going to put ink into my skin that stays there for the rest of my life but I always appreciate some long-term thought behind a person's body modifications. Design it and refine it until it can't be improved upon, then commit it to permanent ink.

Tattoos are permanent. You will have to live with those stripes when you are 60!

Try something temporary, like dying stripes into your hair. I've seen a girl with leopard-spotted hair, and it looked very good!

>>1  As >>3 said, it's permanent, so think about what you're getting and remember your tastes might change in 30-60 years.  There's always the option of something temporary - such as a henna tattoo, try it out, see if you like it, then commit it permanently.  Also, you might want to consider places that are out of the way or can be hidden with clothing - chest, upper legs, ankles, shoulders, etc.  Tattoo removal has come a long way, but is still not perfect.  Most treatments will still leave scars.

Think it through and make sure it's something you'll be happy with.

I have four, myself.

>>3 I like that idea a lot =o (Not a fan of tattoos at all but never thought of using hair dye like that)

Personally, I think it's a cool idea.  I have always loved seeing unique tattoos.  Even just a few strategically placed stripes on visible spots like your wrists or lower ankles would be an awesome effect.

As long you aren't tatooing all over yourself but make a few stripes on upper arm, it's awesome idea. >>4 is also right, you could want to try our henna first.

Wait a couple months till the new form of tattooing comes around. If the tats become a pain, there much easier to get rid of. Should be a couple months to a year

You'll regret it 30 years later.  How 'bout making some stripe stencils and using some markers. =3

Holy cripes you people are like a broken record, "You;ll regret it when you're OLD!"

Fuck that, I know plenty of people that are all grown up (IE:  'Old' in the vernacular of the tweens that seem to infest the fandom) and don't regret a thing they did when they were young. I've yet to meet anyone with a tattoo that later wishes they hadn't got it, barring a few folks that had the kind of 'ink' you get in prison (and even those folks have been getting cover-ups that are wicked-cool).

On the other hand, there's plenty of folks that regret what they didn't do.

Now maybe I just know all the really cool 'old' people, and there's hoards of other bitter folks sitting in nursing homes weeping in shame at there faded old tatts, but I seriously doubt it.  You only live once (or twice, if your lucky and strange) so knock it off with the fear mongering BS, and try to live a little.  My grandmother has more balls - figuratively speaking, bless her soul - than half these whiny nay-sayers, so I definitely agree with the folks that think it's worth a shot.

If the art's to your taste now, and you feel the ink will look good and mean something to you, then do it.  My only word of caution regards the artist you choose - Make that choice carefully.  Pick someone your comfortable with and who works in a reputable shop that's clean and has demonstrated skill and safety.  Plenty of shitty tattoos on folks young AND old that need to be fixed up later (to say nothing of infections, rejected knock-off inks that fade, etc.) simply because someone is too eager and gets inked by the first guy (or girls, plenty of totally sweet female artist's in tattooing these days) willing to take their cash.

tl;dr:  STFU on the fear mongering.  To the OP:  Find a good artist and get it done if it's what you want.  Life is to live.

Oh, and one more thing, re: artist choice.  Always see aamples of their work, and get references from folks who've had custom work done before.  If the artist has bad samples, a portfolio of mediocre flash, and you can't find anyone willing to recommend them, then you can do far better for your money.  I'll never understand how the truely crappy artists out their still manage to charge top dollar for shoddy inking.  :P

I take back what I said.  I agree with 10.  Just make sure you're really sure about this.  Oh, and I apologize for sounding like a broken record (I should've read the other posts).  Thanks again for your words of wisdom 10.

>>10 WTF: "Fear mongering"?  Give me a break, the guy asked for opinions and people are answering.  Just because they don't thing the same as you doesn't make them "fear mongers".

I would say there's some truth to what >>10 said, but also to what other people have said.  I suppose it comes down to maturity. If you feel that you have matured to the point where your tastes today will match those 40 years from now, then sure, go for it.

Consider being given the option to get a tattoo when you were 8 years old when your absolute favorite TV show was Power Rangers.  You get a full-color rendition of the Pink Power Ranger on your arm.  DO you really thing you would still want that when you hit 20?

Sure, you can say technology to remove tattoos is improving perhaps in 10 years it will be an easy, cheap procedure to get it removed. However, since they are still mostly permanent, it's worth thinking about it VERY carefully.  This isn't "fear mongering", it's common sense.

Okay, 'fear mongering' is a bit of an exaggeration.  Still, the bunch of them seem to amount to the same kinda crap mothers tell their kids to make them behave in the way they want - Masturbation will make you go BLIND; if you make faces too much it'll FREEZE that way; if you hit your little brother again, GOD will HATE you forever; don't go in the woods or the WOLVES will eat you...

And of course, don't get a tattoo, you'll regret it when you're OLD!  Bull. Shit.

Really, the 'hysterical mother' mentality has gotten really old, and isn't given much credit anywhere until folks start talking tattoos.  Frankly, I'm just tired of hearing it every time the subject comes up.

Thing about mothers is, they weren't always mothers... they were once your age too! Mothers were clothes and got piecings that their mothers did not approve of. Mothers used to sneak out of the house to go on dates with boys. Mothers lost their virginity in the back seat of a car. Mothers used to experiment with beer and marijuana. Mothers have experienced first-hand what you are going through, and don't want you to make the same mistakes that they made (or the mistakes they watched their friends make). So, listen to your mothers.

Pffft. MY mother wants me to get my belly-button pierced, I've been arguing against it for years. She has way more tattoos than I do. I only have one the I got as a graduation present. (from her. Big surprise there)

Do whatever you want with your own body and life. Just make sure you think it through really well first. You know yourself better than anyone.

Plus, if you don't like the tatt in 10 years, you can just get a coverup. XP
