I laugh when someone is talking about popularity when it comes to furry porn. I mean come on, it's just pictures of human-animals fucking, like you deserve any fame for that. If people like my stuff, that's cool, but I wont strive to make more fans or be the most awesomest "artist" ever.

At least as far as FA goes, there is something to be said for uploading freqently enough that something readily identifiable as yours is easily found on the recents page. Also something I noticed, is that the one pic on my particular gallery with the most hits is of another artist's character that she linked to from one of her journals (this was an entry for a contest she held--I placed second :) ). This particular artist has 22000 pageviews and over 1600 watchers, and also frequently responds to most comments made on her submissions (I also peg that as a factor in her popularity). So, riding the coattails of more popular/visible artists can also boost your apparent popularity. As for the other stuff, yes, appealing to prurient interests goes a long way, and appealing to niche interests can get you a dedicated following (I found that out not too long ago :) ). I wonder what will happen to my hit stats once I get around to doing "adult" work.

I would have to agree with 3 (Raven Rivers). My favorite artist list somedoesn't even take into account the quality of the work. Subject (what the piece says to me) sometimes outweighs how well a piece is done if it doesn't do anything for me. The MonaLisa is a beautiful painting and I can appreciate the work and craftmanship that went into it but it does nothing for me. I would rather look at a pannel from Calvin and Hobbs.

What makes an artist popular can be summed up in two words: fetish and faggotry. I'd say about 75% of all FA/inflation artists (100% of which are assholes) are hardly quality drawers, and out of them, only a few actually like drawing females.

Personally, I dont care if I'm liked or not. I draw what I like (which is females). If the queerboys dont like it, f*** em. I dont cave in to fan demands. My personal beleif is that when you draw what others have in their minds and not what you have in yours, you cease to be an artist.... You become a simple drawing machine. Never let anyone tell you what to draw. Period.

^ dude your just an ass popularity usually deals with how you interact with the fan base, and how far your talent can take you. playing to people's interests is vital no matter what you do so of course its important. and as for the gay/bi/straight thing i personally know more straight furs than gay ones ( me and my fionce being two of the gay ones ) no the community isn't dominated by gay furs. BUT ITS BECAUSE the furry community is so welcoming to anyone and everyone, so there isn't a reason to hide us being gay. therefore alot more of us show up rather than ducking into the background. No the furry community isn't dominated by gay furs. but we arent a minority either

Digital art (SEEMS TO) > traditional art. I see that most people seem to not be able to overlook the OMGWTFPRETTYCOLORS contained therein. I personally prefer traditional art any day... not quite sure what it is about it. And since I am without tablet, it's the only thing I can do without ruining my finger/wrist. And eyes. But I did draw that one piece of (male) homosexual pornography... had a lot more views than a straight piece showing more detail. So that seems to have a lot of importance as well. Unfortunately, a lot of popular people have emotional issues. The other portion never speaks. SO: Digital media Homosexual Porn DRAMALLAMA Quiet cowboy And these seem to be the popular people.

Actually, over time, I've given this subject A LOT of thought. To increase your chances of success: 1.Work regularly, steadily, and predictably. 2.Get deep knowledge of technical art skills in fine art 3.Learn how to use the strongest medium of the time 4.If mainstream, use it to the full extent. Make games, movies, cartoons, comics, toys, and do some commercials (lose some points if you or your character doesn't care for the product). 5.Draw what you like, it's way easier for that to shine. Be realistic though, you have to compromise a little at least. If you only do porn and only like that, draw very some very suggestive stuff sometimes, but don't go directly to mainstream. You'll art will be uninspired and that will make you depressed. 6.If not mainstream, do a handful of mainstream things. Like talk shows, comedies, and memorable minor roles in movies. Regular people will get interested about you, and your normally quiet fans will give those interested people accurate info. 7.Listen to your fans, they sometimes have very good suggestions. Also, it can lift your spirits. 8.Don't pay much attention to naysayers. They can have good suggestions, but it's kinda rare. They generally aren't as mean as they sound or type, they like to exaggerate for their perceived audience. Be nice to them, they might actually like your art, but dislike a couple things. You might need to improve the presentation of your work, so people can better understand what you really mean. 9.People seem to be confuse humility with honesty. Take it too far, and it's just self-humiliation. This is an easy way for you to keep thinking you aren't good enough. A lot of artists seem to have this unfortunate problem of feeling inadequate, despite their skills. Your best best is just to agree when people give compliments that are realistic. Don't say you're better than someone (and try not to agree to other people's compliments that raise you at the cost of others), it's arguable in either direction and so at best, this just hurts feelings. It'll come-back to get you when some of those people surpass you. 10.Increase your knowledge of technology, mythology, religion, stories, culture, history, and people. This goes a long way in helping you make meaningful stories and art. 11.Unless you truly are fully satisfied with how far you've reached, keep trying to improve in all areas. Also, porn artists, please touch yourselves regularly. Make those genitals happy. =D
