Hi hi there!
Yeah, I kinda wonder that myself (and I AM a furry fan). It'd be hard to deny it's something to do with an attraction to animals - even if that's on a subconscious level. Most furries, though, are not into non-anthropomorphic animals.
Hybrids might be considered a kind of 'safe-zone' for many.
I think a lot of it has to do with cartoons as well. Most western kids cartoons aren't human, after all. It'd be easy to see how someone in puberty might make that connect.

Me personally, I got into it because I was really into dragons when I was young, back when the net was just starting (jeeze, was that really a decade ago?)
I eventually found a link that speculated on 'mating rituals' and, being that age, I just dug deeper into it. Finding one image, then another...

A fetish is just something you associate with sex, so if it's cartoon characters, animals, or plush toys, it can all just evolve from there!

It was just the same thing with me good sir,

I don't know why I'm a furry. One day I klicked on a link,
landed onto a furry site that included porn and I was like:
"OMG WTF is that? And why is that Dragongirl so damn sexy?"

Hah! Funny, it's the same story with me. Come to think of it...it was drawings of dragons that I first found...and I'm not even particularly fond of dragons now.

But why do people like ourselves like furry? Try asking someone who collects stamps, or someone who likes working with computers, or someone who has a fondness for german-made sweaters. It's just something they like, much like how furry is just something that we like.
Oh, sure, you could get into predisposition and the subconscious, but you'd probably have no fewer answers than anyone else on the subject.

In the end it's this:
We just do.

>>4 nailed it.

After some soul-searching about why the hell I find all this stuff (Really, it's a lot of different things) hot, I came up with a grand total of nothing... (Still cost me $50.00, though)

It's really just not something that can be analyzed, I guess. Go figure.

I enjoy fantasy.
I enjoy some human traits but find most humans repulsive.
I enjoy some animal traits but find human sex with animals repulsive.

Along comes 'Furry'. Not human and not animal but a fantasy hybrid of the best of both worlds without the worst parts of either.

Problem solved.

I have something of an answer to present to you, but I'll preface it by saying that I really couldn't explain why I like furries to you any more than I could explain why I like oranges. Even so, I will attempt to.

I think my own enjoyment of furry characters comes mostly from how they can be juxtaposed with other furries of different species or normal humans, and how this can make interesting situations in stories or serve to highlight humanity's foibles, follies, geniuses and strengths in the same way. That would be my answer in a nutshell. (Incidentally I find the amount of misanthropy in the furry fandom to be irritating at best)

My early exposure to the furry fandom was mostly at a site called Mia's Main Index, which was a sort of collection of stories featuring furry characters. Then as now the only furry stories that really interested me are the ones that featured humans, or stories in which the furries' different species was a matter of significant import. I'm very sad that the "furry fandom" seems to have completely turned away from these themes and instead pretty much only creates pornography with furries or stories in which the furries' species have no importance. And only a few furry stories feature humans. I'm quite disappointed that most of the material generated in the fandom is porn, with so much of it being of people's furry personas. To me it seems that this is all mostly useless outside of being a way to inflate the fursona's player's ego. I much prefer fiction and art that is a little more inspired, and not necessarily centered on some person's idealized image of themselves.

As for furries in more adult situations, it's really a give or take thing for me. I certainly can enjoy it- some of it is indeed well made- but I would not be distraught if it suddenly died down. Eroticism between humans and furries is what I enjoy the most, perhaps partly because of the reasons above but also I think for the stories that can be built around two such radically different people finding a way to have a romantic relationship. Or perhaps I'm just warped. Or maybe both, heh.

Man. There are at least half a dozen threads about pretty much the same thing. I can forgive a non-furry for not wanting to browse through all of /dis/ but still, it's hardly worth discussing.

Lol my friend did a thread like this a while ago cause he just didnt understand. For me, I LOVE fur, its so nice to snuggle against :3 I love my cat (and snuggling with him) very much but he is only a cat. The idea of cuddling with a person with fur just makes me so happy :)

Also I'm bi(ish) and guys tend to have more 'fur' than girls so...

Fur is definitely a fetish for me, but its more about the cuddling and stroking for me than the yiff :3

SO RONERY ;_;

I'm not a furry, I just like characters of all kinds of wacky fantasy races. Elves, trolls, fairies, androids, aliens, bizarre anime archetypes... all that stuff. As for why... well, why not? They're pretty.

And frankly, real porn looks ugly. I prefer clean, stylised simplicity to sweaty, hairy, badly-lit realism.
