How many in it just for porn and/or closeted?

I've been a furry of sorts for about six years now, but I've never had a fursona and I have only ever befriended like.. three furries in all this time.  I'm not at all open about this particular interest and I guess it's mostly because I'm soley into the fandom for the pornography.. I'm basically just an avid furry art viewer in my own time.  Nothing quite like a good artist's anthropomorphic art, always a lot more interesting than photographs.  But it's just nothing that I'm ever quick to broadcast, being really no more than a fetish to me.. one that, you gotta admit, is a bit bizarre.

Out of curiosity though, how many others like this?  No disrespect, by the way, to those who make it more of a lifestyle than myself; to each his own ya know.

Likewise im similar only met the one person tho, to me it seems erotic an at the same time taboo, it started innocently enough with some sexyfur... hetro to begin with and well... over the years 6 if im counting... its progressed.. to well other stuff!
but for me its about the pure idea of the porn. I don't find the male form attractive, I have used "toys" on myself and do like that, the idea of being "Taken" floats my boat but in reality it wouldn't cut it. I know it would be exactly like the first live concert I went to. Completely shatter my illusions.

Discovered furry when I was about 11, back in 1999 through VCL for art and Mia's Main Index for fiction. With the help of Something Awful dot com (back when it was good) I realized very quickly that what is portrayed in the art and porn is not an accurate reflection of the membership of the furry fandom. Accordingly, never got into it more than that.

I'm also like this. Total secrecy. Not really into the fandom, I just like the porn. Also a closeted bi. Started noticing I was attracted to furry characters about 8 years ago - basically since puberty. I've also recently taken it a step further and have actually started making porn.

I'm a little like that.
Not majorly into the fandom but I'm not just in it for the porn. I do quite like looking at clean drawings sometimes purely because I like some peoples' styles with their drawings.

Although I don't think I'm quite as closeted as some as a few of my close friends know and my girlfriend knows (Male, btw). I'm also Bi - again, with friends knowing - but no family knows.

But, yeah, kind of like that but not fully. Sometimes it's nice to appreciate the art style some people possess without being too turned on by it! ;)

Yeah, I enjoy (well done) anthro art and movies too. I'm not obsessed over it but I do like it quite a bit, and not just for sexual reasons. Any kind of interactions with intelligent animals is intriguing to me, as it is with a lot of people. That's why there's tons of mainstream anthro material.
I'm just not a big fanboy over it and I don't really relate to people who are. There's a lot of connotations that come with saying you're part of the "fandom." Regular people don't look at me and say "hey, there's that guy who's really into anthro stuff." It's just like how I can enjoy a lot of sci-fi stuff and no one goes "there's that sci-fi geek."

That's pretty much exactly how i am. I guess i can understand why people obsess over being furry, because i've obsessed over other things in the past, but i'm just not THAT into it. I mostly hang out here and on FA, looking at porn, and i like clean stuff too, it's just i don't usually connect with the people.

Yeah, I just like the porn.  I'm an uncloseted gay male and I catch so much crap from people who are immersed in the furry culture because I don't do cons, fursuiting, or whatever else.  They insist that I am in some way a "closeted furry". Thing is, I don't feel any sense of an animal alter-ego, perfectly comfortable as a human being and truthfully a lot of the furries I've met over the years are just plain disconnected from reality and a basket full of bizarro neuroses... as in the type who wonder why people think they are messed-up for discussing their paraphilic sexual tastes in polite, mixed company.  Truthfully, if real anthro critters did exist, I'd have no problem with developing interest in one if the personalities meshed well and I wouldn't give a shit what anyone thought (I was raised in a conservative, religious family and came out of the closet anyway, I have nothing to lose), but would I date a person who dressed up as an animal and tried to integrate it into their life in the real world?  No.

I hear ya loud and clear.

The thing I hate the worst is when they call you "self hating."

Because you don't disgrace yourself the way they do, you're self hating.

Apparently.

Yes, and the stock counter-arguments are typically parallels drawn with the gay community's fight for equality as well as that of racial equality.  Usually when the conversation swings that way I just give up.

No, I'm really not that way. I'm just as interested in the Conventions, Clean Art, etc... as I am in the porn. Some of my best friends are furries, and all my close friends know I'm a furry. I also own a fursuit. (No, I do NOT have sex in it- no interest anyways.)

Just figure I'll put this little disclaimer up, no, I'm not blatantly furry. But I don't hide it either. Sure, I have a picture or two of furry things on my netbook, but I don't jam the shit down people's throats. If it comes up, I admit I am one. If not, there's really no reason to. With furry, there really IS no closet in my mind. I am what I am, to say there's a furry closet to me is like saying I'm a closet TV watcher. Wut?

Interestingly, that may be the reason why the "furry community" is mostly made of annoying retards: because of militant gays in the "furry community" doing the same "gay fight for equality" of old, except with furries.

It's a more ridiculous version of it, I'm thinking of those retards screaming "FURSECUTION" at the drop of a hat.
Minority or not, they surely use similar "tactics".

And straight furries (like me) are a dying breed, what a shame.

Many (most?) furries straight or not seem to think that being in the furry fandom is sort of like a race or religion, and that people who make fun of furries are somehow being fascists etc.

Go on SL and make fun of furries to see what I mean. It really is that simple and stupid.

Eh. Not really. I've seen it more even. I've met a hell of a lot of furries who are actually completely straight when it comes to real life stuff, compared to the amount of those gay/bi in RL.

And straight furries (like me) are a dying breed, what a shame.

No, we're just going into "hiding" really, is more what it seems.

This is what you get when you demand recognition for a fetish or identity crisis.   Really, who cares what anyone's bedroom interests are as long as it is consensual?  I could dress up like a kitchen appliance and scream that people are being racist/fascist/whatever because they refuse to call me a toaster and acknowledge my spiritual need for electricity.... it still doesn't make me a toaster.  There really is no comparison to the gay community, they are mimicking the tactics but it will never go anywhere because at the end of the day they are still just a person wearing a fursuit and not an actual, sentient animal demanding recognition and freedom from oppression.  I think the whole culture demands a feature-length Sacha Cohen "Borat" or "Bruno"-style reality mockumentary.   I would totally pay to watch that!

Yes, and make the fandom look even more worse.

I don't think it's quite necessary when its loudest (most idiotic) members do that already.

What the hell ever happened to fandoms just keeping to themselves and enjoying what their fandom had to offer? I mean, that goes with ANY fandom to date. Fandoms are just beyond ridiculous now.

Oh well.

Yes, and make the fandom look even more worse.

Maybe so but ultimately, wider scrutiny can be healthy for any community b/c it causes them to examine their values, who they include and what should be removed/broken off into a more isolated splinter group.  Yeah, that's a huge can of worms when it comes to the fandom but from what I can see so far, said scrutiny is inevitable and will only become more intense as the fandom becomes more noticeable.

I don't think it's quite necessary when its loudest (most idiotic) members do that already.

Also think of how easy it would be to spin them as the tweakers they are while also showing the more even-tempered and fun ones for some perspective.

I've accepted that I'm bi even though I don't really find males that attractive IRL. I'm attracted to masculinity (in males, not in females) and I like the idea of being with another guy; but I never think "that guy looks hot" or ever have a crush on guys or want to go out with them. With furries I'm pretty evenly split between male and female. If there ever was a real furry guy I would be all over that.

Furry is part of my lifestyle but it isn't my whole lifestyle you know? I've always thought it's important to stay grounded in reality or you're going to end up deluding yourself about life like a lot of miserable, stay at home, jobless furs do.

for tldr:
thinking of yourself as two different beings = unstable
realizing/accepting/exploring all parts of yourself = balanced

at least this has been the case for me.
